About Nkateko
Hi, I’m Nkateko Masinga, an aspiring lawyer, writer, speaker, and creative.
I’m passionate about the power of language, not only as a tool for academic success but as a way to communicate ideas, tell meaningful stories, build confidence, and make an impact.
I offer lessons in English Language & Literature, Public Speaking & Debating, Creative Writing & Publishing, and Spoken Word Poetry. My goal is to create a space where students can strengthen their skills while discovering their own voice and learning to express themselves with confidence.
Whether you want to improve your English, become a more persuasive speaker, sharpen your writing, prepare for debates, or explore poetry and creative expression, I want to help you develop practical skills that extend beyond the classroom.
As someone currently pursuing a career in law, I understand the importance of being able to read critically, write clearly, construct a strong argument, speak confidently, and communicate ideas effectively. These are skills I believe every student can develop with the right guidance and practice.
My lessons are designed to be engaging, encouraging, and tailored to the individual student. I’m not here simply to teach you how to write or speak better. I want to help you discover how you want to tell your story, why your voice matters, and how to make your views heard.
I look forward to learning with you and helping you become a more confident communicator, writer, and thinker.

My teaching methodology is all-encompassing: the craft of writing, the critical reading of literature and poems, vocal training for public speaking and debating, the business of publishing, building a professional artist profile, applying for residency opportunities designed for writers and artists, and much more! I curate my lessons according to your needs as a student.
My 12-week course outline for poets looks something like this:
Part 1: Writing
Week 1: Poem to Page: First drafts as conduits for magic - An introduction to poetic form and craft, identifying the core or “skeleton” of your poems and adding flesh through literary devices.
Week 2: Page to Published: From personal diaries to writers’ directories - Exploring the world of literary journals and magazines, submitting your work, writing cover letters and proposals.
Week 3: Published to Paid: Building your profile - Sending expressions of interest, submitting work to poetry chapbook contests, compiling a collection of poems, finding the right publisher for your project.
Part 2: Performing
Week 4: Poem to Stage: The art of bringing words to life - Reading and performing your poems for an audience, whether it’s an open mic, library reading or slam competition.
Week 5: Stage to States: Networking in the literary community - Attending local and international poetry festivals, finding or forming writing groups, reaching out to individuals and organisations for collaborative work.
Week 6: States to Signed: The business of poetry - Taking your poetry into the corporate space, writing for brands and curating your personal brand identity as an artist and poet.
Part 3: Editing
Week 7: The Energy of Revision: Ruthless editing (“Kill your darlings!”) - An interactive session detailing the path from first draft to award-winning poem.
Week 8: Perfecting Form: Craft as a resource, not a restriction - How to put your poem into different “containers” to find its perfect shape for both the page and the stage.
Week 9: Breaking Form: Experimenting with craft to find your voice - Finding your point of deviation from work that inspires you and writing in your unique voice.
Part 4: Recharging
Week 10: Residencies and Retreats: Applying for and self-curating opportunities to reconnect with your creativity - Programmes designed for poets, how to apply, compiling a statement of purpose.
Week 11: Poetry as Play: Writing in response to poem-a-day or “writing month” prompts, creating your own writing challenges, analysing and critiquing poems, receiving constructive feedback on your own work.
Week 12: Reflection and Feedback: An interactive session on compiling an artistic portfolio, prioritising self-care and community care after an intensive programme, resources available for further support, staying in touch with your new community.
