About Aritra
Hello! I'm Aritra, a postgraduate in Genomic Science from the Central University of Kerala and a computational biologist with a passion for understanding biology through data and computation.
My research has taken me across genomics, molecular biology, evolutionary biology, and bioinformatics. Working on real biological problems has shown me that modern biology is no longer confined to the laboratory. Today's discoveries increasingly rely on integrating biological knowledge with statistics and computational analysis to understand complex living systems.
My work focuses on this intersection. I have developed reproducible computational workflows for comparative genomics, phylogenomics, and metagenomics, designing analytical pipelines, analyzing large-scale genomic datasets, and working in Linux and high-performance computing environments to translate computational results into biological insight.
What fascinates me most is the systems-level nature of biology. Rather than viewing genes, proteins, cells, and organisms as isolated subjects, I see them as interconnected components of larger biological systems. This perspective shapes how I approach research, combining biological intuition with computational thinking to understand life across multiple scales.
As machine learning, high-throughput sequencing, and large-scale biological datasets become central to research, scientists who can combine biological knowledge with computational skills will be well positioned to contribute to the next generation of discoveries. My work is driven by that philosophy, and I continue exploring how computation can help us understand the complexity of living systems.

Modern biology is no longer confined to the laboratory. Advances in genomics, next-generation sequencing, multi-omics, and artificial intelligence have transformed biological research into a highly data-driven discipline. As a result, computational skills have become essential for students pursuing careers in biotechnology, genomics, bioinformatics, and biomedical research.
Unfortunately, many undergraduate and postgraduate Life Science programs still place far greater emphasis on wet-laboratory techniques than computational biology. Students often realize only during their postgraduate studies, dissertation work, or job search that they are expected to analyze sequencing data, write scripts, and navigate computing environments they were never trained on. These are skills that are increasingly expected in modern biological research but are not always taught systematically.
This course is designed to bridge that gap. I teach students how computational methods are used to answer biological questions. Every topic is taught in its biological context, so students understand how an analysis is performed and why it is being performed, and how the results should be interpreted.
What you'll learn
Depending on your background and goals, lessons can include:
1. Foundations of computational biology and bioinformatics
2. Linux command line for biological research
3. Python programming for biological data analysis
4. Essential biostatistics and statistical reasoning
5. Working with biological databases
6. Sequence analysis and comparative genomics
7. Phylogenetics and evolutionary analysis
8. High-performance computing (HPC)
9. Reproducible computational workflows
10. Biological data visualization and interpretation
My teaching philosophy
Every student begins from a different starting point.
Some students have never written a line of code. Others know Python but struggle to apply it to biological problems. Some are experienced in wet-laboratory research but feel intimidated by computational methods.
Rather than following a rigid syllabus, I first assess your current knowledge and then build a personalized learning pathway. Concepts are introduced gradually, beginning with the biological problem before moving to the computational solution. This approach helps students develop genuine understanding instead of memorizing commands or software workflows.
Throughout the course, we work with practical examples inspired by real biological research. I encourage students to ask questions and explore alternative approaches, and we work through the reasoning behind each analysis together.
Who are these classes for?
These lessons are ideal for:
1. Undergraduate and postgraduate students in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Genomics, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, and Life Sciences.
2. Students preparing for research projects, dissertations, or postgraduate studies.
3. Wet-laboratory researchers who want to transition into computational biology.
4. Anyone looking to build the computational skills increasingly expected in modern biological research.
As biology becomes more quantitative and data-driven, researchers who can combine biological knowledge with computational thinking are increasingly well positioned for opportunities in academia, biotechnology, and healthcare. My aim is to help you develop those skills with confidence, so you can analyze biological data, understand modern research, and contribute to the future of the life sciences.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I’ve had the opportunity to know Aritra as a teacher, and what stands out most is his ability to make learning feel clear, engaging, and approachable. He is patient, attentive, and genuinely invested in helping his students understand the subject rather than simply memorising information.
What I appreciate most about his teaching method is that he adapts his approach to the student. He takes the time to explain concepts step by step, encourages questions, and creates a comfortable environment where it’s easy to learn from mistakes and build confidence.
One of the things I particularly value about working with Aritra is how supportive and encouraging he is throughout the learning process. He combines strong subject knowledge with a friendly and practical teaching style, which makes lessons both productive and enjoyable.
I would absolutely recommend Aritra to other students looking for a dedicated and reliable tutor. He is knowledgeable, patient, approachable, and genuinely cares about his students’ progress. I’m confident that anyone learning with him would benefit not only academically but also in terms of confidence and motivation.
Having known Aritra for nearly seven years, I can confidently say that he is one of the brightest minds I have come across in the field of Biology. We pursued our Master’s degree in Genomic Science together, during which we also had the opportunity to co-author a book chapter published in a reputed research journal.
What truly sets Aritra apart is his exceptional ability to explain Biology in a clear, engaging, and remarkably simple manner. During our academic years, he was well known for making even complex and critical biological concepts easy to understand during presentations. His depth of knowledge, combined with his ability to communicate concepts effectively, makes learning with him both interesting and rewarding.
Aritra has also been tutoring students for several years, and his ability to connect with students is one of his greatest strengths. He takes the time to understand each student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning pace, and adapts his teaching accordingly. Rather than simply providing information, he focuses on building conceptual clarity and making sure his students genuinely understand what they are learning.
Based on my experience of knowing and working with him for almost seven years, I can wholeheartedly recommend Aritra as an exceptional Biology teacher. His strong academic foundation, clarity of concepts, teaching ability, and genuine commitment to his students make him someone I would confidently recommend to any student looking to strengthen their understanding of Biology and achieve their academic goals.View more recommendations

My hourly fee includes personalized one-to-one instruction, lesson planning, and all teaching materials used during the session. Depending on your goals, lessons may include annotated notes, coding exercises, practice datasets, reading recommendations, and curated resources for independent learning.
Students working on university coursework, dissertations, or research projects are welcome to bring their own data, assignments, or analyses to the sessions. I can help with understanding concepts, debugging code, interpreting results, and developing reproducible computational workflows. My focus is on helping you build the skills and confidence to solve problems independently rather than simply providing solutions.
Online lessons are conducted using screen sharing and interactive coding sessions, allowing us to work through analyses together in real time. If additional preparation is required for highly specialized topics or research consultation, this will be discussed in advance.
The first lesson is free and serves as an opportunity to discuss your background, learning objectives, and current level so that I can recommend a personalized learning plan.
