About Allison
I have 20 years of experience teaching environmental education, biology, zoology, marine science, microbiology, and earth science. I have experience teaching both in a formal and informal setting. I spent 2 years teaching outdoor education as an intern in college before graduating with a BS in Biology and a minor in Marine Biology. After that, I spent 7 years teaching the general public and school groups in an aquarium before I moved into the formal classroom setting. At the aquarium, I gained experience teaching all ages ranging from age 2 through adult. From there, I decided to get my master's degree, and I spent 5 years studying and researching on boats in the Chesapeake Bay and Gulf of Mexico before graduating and moving into higher education. I have been teaching general biology, zoology, microbiology, and earth science at the college level for five years.

My approach to teaching is to have a classroom that allows for student centered inquiry based learning. I want the students to feel ownership over their own learning so I usually begin lessons by posing a question and allowing them to explore the topic. With many lessons often follow the five E's: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate. This is more difficult in the college setting since we have so much material to cover but all homework and labs I assigned still follow this method. This allows students to be active learners and more involved in the process rather just listening and reading. This helps them learn to observe and think critically which are two very important skills in science.
