I design each lesson to be goal-oriented, skill-focused, and student-centered. I want to go beyond just teaching grammar, but I want to empower students to discover and trust their emerging academic voices, especially those that need additional support. My blend of empathy and rigor is effective for middle to high school students. A typical lesson begins with objective setting, a review, and then an interactive lesson which consists of reading, writing, and receiving feedback. Each lesson caters to the learning styles of each student, and they receive mini-lessons for additional support. I also provide continuous, constructive feedback throughout the lesson, and not just at the end of the session. This cycle of feedback allows the student to adjust their understanding of the material and form questions to clarify any misunderstandings. In addition, feedback allows students to become independent writers as they begin to recognize "good writing." This structured approach has resulted in students not only improving their grades, but increasing their confidence as writers.
