About Steven

This tutoring service is led by Dr. Lopez, a tenured professor of Chemistry at a top R1 research university. Dr. Lopez has taught more than 1,200 college students, many of whom are pre-med and pre-health majors, balancing rigorous coursework with MCAT preparation. Dr. Lopez specializes in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and MCAT-relevant chemical concepts, with an emphasis on deep understanding rather than memorization. His teaching approach mirrors how chemistry is tested on the MCAT and in upper-level college courses, focusing on critical thinking, data interpretation, and problem-solving under time constraints. Dr. Lopez understands how college chemistry courses are designed, how exams are written, and where students most often struggle—because he has done it countless times. Tutoring sessions are structured, efficient, and tailored to each student’s goals, whether that means improving course performance, strengthening MCAT readiness, or rebuilding confidence in chemistry. Tutoring is available in individual or small-group sessions, allowing for personalized instruction while encouraging active engagement and discussion. Students benefit from clear explanations, practical strategies, and mentorship grounded in real classroom experience. This is chemistry tutoring informed by years of teaching, mentoring, and helping future physicians succeed.

I tutor Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry, focusing on core concepts, reaction mechanisms, and exam preparation. I offer individual and group sessions in-person and over videoconferencing. A typical lesson plan includes

1. Goal Setting & Check-In: Each session begins with a brief check-in to identify the student’s immediate goals. This may include preparing for an upcoming exam, working through MCAT-style questions, reviewing recent lecture material, or addressing specific areas of confusion.

2. Concept Clarification: Core concepts are reviewed using clear, intuitive explanations that emphasize understanding over memorization. Complex ideas are broken down into manageable pieces, with attention to how the material is tested in college courses and on the MCAT.

3. Guided Problem Solving: Students work through representative problems or passages with active guidance. Emphasis is placed on recognizing patterns, choosing efficient strategies, and avoiding common mistakes. This step builds confidence and reinforces correct reasoning.

4. Independent Practice & Feedback: Students attempt problems independently while receiving real-time feedback. This step helps identify lingering gaps, refine problem-solving approaches, and strengthen exam readiness under realistic conditions.

5. Summary & Next Steps: Each session concludes with a concise summary of key takeaways and a plan for continued progress. Students leave with clear action items, recommended practice strategies, and guidance on how to study effectively between sessions.
