About KATHLEEN

I have been teaching college students since 2007 and bring extensive experience as an instructor, academic tutor, student success coach, mediator, and professional coach. I hold a master’s degree in Mediation and Applied Conflict Studies and have taught courses in writing, research, public speaking, interpersonal communication, workplace communication, conflict resolution, and coaching skills.

In addition to teaching undergraduate students, I have coached graduate students and working professionals in mediation and conflict resolution skills. I have also worked as a college Learning Center tutor and spent seven years as a TRIO Student Success Coach, providing individualized academic support to students with a wide variety of backgrounds, strengths, and challenges.

My teaching style is encouraging, intellectually engaged, and straightforward. I take students and their ideas seriously, and I try to create an environment where it is comfortable to ask questions, experiment, make mistakes, and learn. I particularly enjoy helping someone move from “I don’t know how to do this” to having both a clear way forward and greater confidence in their own abilities.

I welcome traditional college and graduate students as well as adult and returning learners. Whether you are struggling with an assignment, trying to become a stronger writer or communicator, or looking for advanced support in mediation and conflict resolution, I will meet you where you are and help you build from there.

My approach is collaborative, practical, and tailored to the individual learner. I don’t believe tutoring should simply give you the “right answer.” My goal is to help you understand what you’re doing, strengthen your skills, and become more confident working independently.

I have nearly 20 years of college- and professional-level teaching experience, and I've also worked as a college Learning Center tutor and TRIO Student Success Coach. I teach writing, research, public speaking, interpersonal and workplace communication, and have extensive experience teaching and coaching mediation, conflict resolution, and coaching skills at the graduate and professional levels.

A typical session begins with what you want to accomplish. We might work together on understanding an assignment, developing and organizing ideas, revising a paper, strengthening an argument, preparing a presentation, or working through a difficult concept. I use questions, discussion, examples, and specific feedback rather than simply telling you what to do. I want you to leave the session with both a stronger piece of work and a better understanding of how you got there.

For mediation and conflict resolution students, tutoring can also be highly experiential. We can explore conflict theory, analyze cases, work through mediation scenarios, practice skills such as listening, questioning and reframing, prepare for role plays, or examine challenging moments in your own practice. I have coached graduate students and working professionals in mediation skills and taught conflict resolution and coaching skills at the graduate level.

What sets me apart is the breadth of experience I bring to one-on-one learning. I have been a college instructor, academic tutor, student success coach, mediator, restorative justice practitioner, and professional coach. I understand that people learn differently, and I enjoy figuring out what helps a particular student make sense of something that has felt confusing or difficult.

I work especially well with college and graduate students, adult and returning learners, and professionals who want individualized support in writing, communication, mediation, conflict resolution, or related areas.
