About Grace
I earned my PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan in 2021, along with a certificate in Graduate Teaching from the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. I won a highly competitive Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor award in 2020. Good teaching is important to me, and I work hard to stay abreast of best practices in multimodal learning, teaching for accessibility, and antiracist pedagogy.
Sharing and getting feedback on your writing can be stressful, especially if you haven’t been encouraged to think of yourself as a writer, so I appreciate my students’ generosity and vulnerability in bringing me into their process. My goal is to help you cultivate your unique writerly voice through drafting, revision, and reflection. My proudest moments are when I see students take ownership of their writing (and even pleasure in it!) as they gain skill and confidence. Anyone can be a clear and persuasive writer – I can help you do it.

I am an experienced literature and composition educator, with five years of teaching at the undergraduate level at the University of Michigan in addition to experience teaching in high school contexts. I know what kind of writing colleges expect, because I've taught at one!
I can guide you through the writing process for literary, rhetorical, and comparative analysis essays, narrative- and research-based arguments, and college application essays. I can offer help at the conceptualization, research, and writing stages, as well as provide proofreading strategies and services. Because I also have experience working with English language learners, I can offer targeted support for English grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure issues when necessary.
My first session is primarily directed toward getting to know the student, the writing projects they’d like to work together on, and their goals and areas in which they hope to improve. Then, we can draft a timeline for completion of the writing project (depending on the due date) and decide on a focus for our next session(s) together. We could focus on: conceptualization (for the next part of the project, if the student has not completed a full draft), drafting (writing together), or revision (for mechanics or for structure). At each stage, I will ask the student to reflect on their process and progress, to assess what is working for them, what isn’t, and where they could use more support.
