About Alex
I’m a relaxed, friendly composition tutor with 25 years’ experience as a composer, and I love passing on what I’ve learnt.
I hold a BA (Hons) in Music from the University of Leeds, with a major in Electroacoustic Composition and minor in Music Technology.
My main instrument is guitar - acoustic, electric and bass. I also play banjo, mandolin, ukulele, clarinet and synthesiser.

My focus is on the more artsy side of popular music — particularly folk, post-rock, progressive rock, experimental rock, ambient, etc. — with strong influences from various forms of classical music (romantic era, minimalism, electroacoustic, experimental).
I can support you in:
• Notated composition (scores and written music)
• Un-notated composition for your chosen instrument
• Digital composition using recorded sound or virtual instruments
Lessons can include:
• Detailed, constructive feedback on your compositions — identifying where you could improve and how to better achieve what you want to achieve
• Music theory, tailored to your creative goals
• Exercises to build specific skills
• Music history and context, if that’s something you’re interested in exploring
One of the greatest pleasures of being a composer has been gradually discovering my own unique voice — a sensibility that makes my music distinctive, even while experimenting across genres and collaborating with others.
I’ll aim to help you find that for yourself.
Throughout our work together, we’ll keep returning to the most important questions:
What do YOU want?
What do YOU find beautiful?
I can also help people who want to learn to improvise. I can teach you:
• How to let go of outcomes, risk making mistakes and be playfully creative (the most important part)
• How to give shape to improvisations as they happen
• How to employ theoretical knowledge on the fly
• How to listen and react to other musicians
