About Eva
Hi, I’m Eva, the owner and maker behind Madmare Designs.
By day, I work full-time for the Iowa Department of Corrections. By night (and most weekends), you’ll usually find me in the shop surrounded by leather, tools, unfinished projects, and at least one thing I swore I wasn’t going to start until I finished the last project.
I’ve always loved creating things with my hands, and leatherwork became the perfect mix of craftsmanship, problem-solving, and creativity. What started as a hobby grew into a business creating custom Western leather goods, including belts, tack, knife sheaths, guitar straps, wallets, and one-of-a-kind commissioned pieces.
As a horsewoman, I have a special appreciation for functional gear that can stand up to real-world use while still looking good. My work combines traditional leatherworking techniques with custom designs tailored to each customer’s style and needs.
I believe learning should be approachable, practical, and FUN. Nobody starts out knowing everything, and I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way.
Whether you’re interested in leathercraft as a hobby, a creative outlet, or a future business, I’m excited to help you learn the skills and confidence to create something you’re proud of.

If you’ve ever looked at a handmade leather belt, wallet, or piece of tack and thought, “I could probably make that,” you’re in the right place.
I’m Eva, owner of Madmare Designs, and I teach leathercraft the same way I learned it—by getting your hands dirty and making stuff. Horses inspired my journey into leatherwork, which grew into my undeniable passion. I couldn't afford brand new tack, so I taught myself how to give aged items a new life!
Whether you’re completely new to leatherworking or you’ve already bought a couple of leather craft goods, I’ll help you build skills and confidence through real projects. We can cover tooling, carving, pattern making, dyeing, finishing, hand stitching, hardware installation, and custom Western leatherwork.
Want to make a belt? Let’s make a belt. Want to build a knife sheath, guitar strap, bronc noseband, or custom tack? We’ll tackle it together. Need help on a repair? Lets figured it out.
My goal isn’t just to teach you leathercraft—it’s to teach you how to create quality pieces you’ll actually use, gift, or even sell. Along the way, I’ll share tips, tricks, mistakes I’ve made so you don’t have to, and the little things that separate “homemade” from “handcrafted.
Warning: leathercraft is addictive. One day you’re making a keychain, and the next you’re explaining to your family why you absolutely need a space in your garage.
