About Yumi
I was born and raised in Japan. I took classical piano lessons from ages three to ten and began teaching myself jazz and improvisational composition around the age of twenty. I later moved to Los Angeles, where I worked as a jazz pianist and teacher. I earned a BM in Jazz Studies and Piano Performance from California State University, Northridge. While in Los Angeles, I performed at venues such as the LightHouse, Beckman Auditorium as part of the Caltech Jazz Big Band, the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, and The Soraya. I released my original albums, Imagination Canvas in 2022 and Fly High in 2025.

Classical, Jazz, and Pop Piano Lessons – All Levels Welcome! Adult learners and beginners are especially welcome. I understand that life can be busy, and it’s not always easy to find time to practise. My goal is to help you make steady progress, even if it’s slow, while making each lesson enjoyable and productive. I personalise each lesson to meet your individual goals. I focus on playing your favourite songs while also learning key musical concepts. I have a good ear to pick up what you’re playing, so it’s fine if you don’t set up a camera on your hands during online lessons. For in-person lessons, I emphasise ensemble playing with my accompaniments so you can enjoy the full sound of the piano with a steady rhythm. I mainly use Alfred’s Piano Adventures for structured lessons, along with other materials as needed. If the students have their own book, we can use it as well. I teach posture, ear training, score reading, theory, composition, and improvisation. My aim is to share the love, beauty, and joy of music with students all over the world. I look forward to meeting you! Lessons available in English and Japanese.
