Hey, I am Luke, a current freshman at Stevens Institute of Technology, USA; I'm majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a possible minor in Public Policy, alongside a Premedical Track (Yeah, hoping to become a doc (dream is to be a cardiothoracic surgeon), if luck permits, alongside being an engineer). I'm also pursuing an Associate's Degree in Computer Science, alongside this! On a lighter note, am a crazy leaf collector, with my own personal herbarium. I also love Model UN and debate, & would be the one person frivolously debating for hours on any possible topic under the sun. I have seen college students struggling with basics such as human anatomy terminologies (dorsal/posterior, superior/inferior, proximal/distal, frontal, sagittal/transverse section). WHY? These students are sometimes studying Medicine, but still have trouble with these basic terms, which are the cornerstone of Surgery. The Reason is this: Memorize any word that appear in the textbook, blindly, for exams. I know, the textbook doesn't explain these terms- they just list them! It's your job to learn them- and that is what I do in my classes. You will have to learn beyond the book, to understand concepts in great detail, without blindly using scientific terms. Doing this, you will ace your exam trust me! Therefore I would be focused on helping you understand the concept so that you retain it for life, and not for an exam.
Well, don't you just feel that Biology is all about memorization? I felt the same, when I was in your shoes :)
But trust me Chemistry & Biology, and Math for that matter, are amazing when you get to know what you are exactly learning. You gotta visualize bud :) and this can be achieved through exploring the topic in depth beyond the book. Do conduct experiments when you are at it!
And for subjects like Biology, you don't need to memorize but to understand and visualize the protein synthesis pathway- after this try writing a lab report (short 1 paragraph)
Same applies for chemistry where you need to understand how hybridization works, and how the compounds would look like as a result. The same goes for math, while integrating over an infinite series! Trust me, this will help a lot when you take Multivariable Calculus aka Calculus 3 in college
That's most of my teaching strategy. I love to crack jokes while teaching, so as to keep the student engaged. I usually would also ask them to visualize and draw what is written on paper, to ignite their critical visualization aka spatial skills. I might sometimes go beyond the textbooks to explain a concept, so do bare with me! It is crucial as the textbooks don't usually explain the concepts in great detail, and sometimes you gotta know how the theory you are learning on paper is translating into real-world innovations!
For me all subjects are interconnected, and this is what I hope to bring to the classes I would teach. When we are done for the day, we can also read through a science comics, or a good-old paper from PubMed. Alongside the "regular teaching" I also hope that I would be able to, inspire you to conduct your own research in the subject you once hated :)
I started out the same, and thankfully to my teacher I was able to publish a research paper in a journal as a high schooler, and also went on to write 2 other papers, currently in the copy-editing field.
You will soon learn to love biology & math :)... or maybe learn how to create a small trojan horse from scratch & a virus-scanner within the field of CS.
My class is usually intended for high school students but I can definitely teach middle schoolers too !!
Here is a suggestion to remember the Nomenclature in Biology:
Start by creating a "taxonomy tree." To do this, you will need a large sheet of paper and markers or colored pencils.
First, research and identify a group of organisms that you would like to classify. This could be a group of animals, plants, or microorganisms. Next, start at the top of your sheet of paper and draw a large circle representing the kingdom that the organisms belong to.
Below the kingdom, draw smaller circles representing the different phyla or divisions within the kingdom. Continue drawing circles for each successive level of classification, such as class, order, family, genus, and species.
As you draw each circle, label it with the appropriate taxonomic name and add any relevant details, such as physical characteristics or habitat. You can also color-code the circles to help visualize the relationships between different groups of organisms.
When you are finished, you will have created a visual representation of the nomenclature system used in biology, showing how different organisms are related and classified. This activity is a great way to understand the structure of the biological classification system and how it is used to name and organize living things.
Having problems with understanding what a protein is? Try this out:
Create a model of a protein using clay or playdough. To do this, you will need:
Clay or playdough in different colors
Toothpicks or small wooden sticks
A flat surface, such as a baking sheet or tray
To create your model, follow these steps:
Research the structure and function of a specific protein. You can choose a protein that is important in your body, such as hemoglobin or insulin, or a protein that has a unique function, such as green fluorescent protein.
Using the clay or playdough, create a model of the protein's primary structure by forming small balls or cylinders to represent the individual amino acids. The colors of the balls or cylinders should correspond to the different types of amino acids found in the protein.
Connect the amino acid balls or cylinders using toothpicks or wooden sticks to represent the peptide bonds that link the amino acids together.
Assemble the model on a flat surface, such as a baking sheet or tray.
Once you have finished your model, use it to help you understand how the sequence of amino acids in a protein determines its three-dimensional structure and function. You can also use your model to explore how changes in the sequence of amino acids, such as mutations, can affect the protein's structure and function.
This same applies to chemistry- I know most students struggle with topics such as VSEPR, Molecular Orbital Theory, Crystal Field Theory or even basics like Hybridization. Try the same process out: you will understand how easy it is afterwards

I wanted to take a moment to recommend Luke as a math teacher. Specifically, his ability to teach calculus concepts in a way that is visually appealing and easy to understand has been incredibly helpful for me.
One area where Luke really excels is in his use of graphic representations to help us understand difficult concepts, such as integration formulas. He would often draw out graphs and diagrams to illustrate the different steps in the process, which made it much easier for me to grasp the material.
