About James

Founded in 2015 after a career in technology and management consulting, I brought analytical problem-solving and high-performance coaching into deeply personal education.

It began with my own four children—and a realization: students don't simply need someone who knows the subject. They need someone who understands how they think.

What began me tutoring my own kids and their soccer teams grew into a founder-led, team-supported practice serving learners far beyond that original circle.

I owe much of my own critical thinking to the teachers, mentors, and exemplary people who challenged and inspired me toward personal excellence: Premo, Prochaska, Schroeder, Pesola, Putman, Anderson, Fox, McCauley, Lapp, Mestek, Hart, and Kilkenny, just to name a few.

Over thousands of hours of tutoring, one lesson kept repeating: two students can struggle with the same problem for completely different reasons, and effective teaching begins by discovering the difference.

I did not begin with a teaching system and then search for students to fit it. The system emerged from years of adapting to the students sitting in front of us.

Through it all, one goal has remained constant: develop capable, confident, increasingly independent learners.

My teaching philosophy:
* “Listen first. Teach next.” We don't just teach the lesson. We teach the learner how to learn.
* Teach from where the learner is—not from where the textbook assumes they are.
* Connection-driven. Socratic. Deliberately adaptive.
* A great tutoring relationship should become increasingly unnecessary as the learner becomes increasingly capable.
* Confusion is information. A wrong answer is not simply something to correct—it is evidence of what the learner understands, assumes, or has not yet connected.
* Understanding comes before speed. Speed becomes valuable once understanding is reliable.
* The learner should do the thinking. The professor's job is to create the conditions that make better thinking possible.

1. Weekly planning, prioritization & accountability keep the whole semester visible
2. Built-in tutoring support is available when individual classes need attention
3. Proactive intervention catches small problems before they become academic crises
4. We build organization, ownership & independence — not permanent dependence

* Academic Partner produces measurable change:
Families have seen an average GPA improvement of 1.5 points, with measurable improvement in organization and follow-through within three months, for students on an ongoing Academic Partner relationship.
* More than tutoring, an academic home base:
Academic Partner gives the student one consistent Professor who helps connect planning, accountability, tutoring and academic guidance throughout the month.
* Don't wait for the crisis to create the plan:
Weekly planning catches approaching tests, projects, missing work and overloaded weeks while there is still time to respond intelligently.
* Accountability works best before the deadline:
Regular check-ins make it harder for small assignments, unfinished studying and avoidance to quietly accumulate into a crisis.
* Tutoring support is already part of the relationship:
When a class suddenly needs attention, Standard and Advanced Academic Partner programs include tutoring capacity without requiring the family to start searching for help from scratch.
* Prevention is usually cheaper than recovery:
A missed project, failing test or collapsing grade can require substantially more time to repair than identifying the problem early.
* Grades are rarely just about the material:
Grades are affected not only by subject knowledge, but by planning, organization, deadlines, study habits, follow-through and knowing when to ask for help.
* The goal is not more supervision; it's more independence:
We want students to gradually internalize the planning, organization and self-management habits they currently need help maintaining.
* We track more than grades — we track whether the student needs us less:
We look at academic performance, completed work, follow-through, organization, emerging problems and the student's ability to manage responsibilities more independently.
* Your Academic Partner sees the whole schedule — not just one subject:
Instead of separate tutors solving isolated problems, your Academic Partner maintains continuity across the student's schedule, priorities and academic goals.
* Weekly planning turns "I need to study" into an actual plan:
Large assignments are broken into concrete next steps, competing deadlines are prioritized, and the student enters the week knowing what needs to happen.
* Parents shouldn't have to become the academic project manager:
Academic Partner gives the student another responsible adult who can help organize, prioritize and follow through — while keeping parents appropriately informed.
* Start with a complimentary consultation — no cost, no commitment:
We look at the student's academic demands, habits and current support needs before recommending whether an ongoing Academic Partner relationship makes sense.
