About Alexander
Toronto-born cellist Alexander Smith began lessons at the age of 3. Since then, he has performed extensively across the United States, Canada, Austria and Denmark and has been featured on The Violin Channel, National Public Radio, and Interlochen Public Radio. Alexander received a Masters in Music from The New England Conservatory, where he was a recipient of the Beneficent Society scholarship, studying under Blaise Déjardin and Yeesun Kim. He received a Chancellor’s Scholarship to attend Vanderbilt University for his undergraduate studies with Dr. Felix Wang, while enrolled in a dual-degree program in Environmental Science. Alexander also holds a diploma with academic honours from the Interlochen Arts Academy.
Alexander has studied under renowned musicians such as Anssi Kartunnen, Edgar Meyer, Hans Jørgen Jensen, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Johannes Moser, Lluís Claret, Marc Coppey, Paul Watkins, and Zlatomir Fung, among others. In 2019, he was awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Young Artist Award and was featured on NPR’s From The Top. In 2021, he was the sole recipient of the Jean Keller Heard Prize for Excellence in String Performance.
He is the cellist of Trio Alinea, formed at the New England Conservatory under the tutelage of Ara Gregorian and Vivian Hornik Weilerstein. From 2019 to 2023, Alexander served as the cellist of the Eunoia String Quartet, the invited ensemble in residence at Southern Illinois University, and prizewinners and laureates of the MTNA, Coltman and Plowman Chamber Competitions. Alexander has a strong passion for contemporary music, having performed notable works such as George Crumb’s Vox Balaenae, collaborating closely with musicians such as Pascal Le Boeuf, and premiering works adapted to silent film by Maria Newman. He has given the premiere performance of three solo works for cello to date. He is also an active participant in the historical performance practise, having studied baroque cello with Handel and Haydn Society principal cellist Guy Fishman.
He performs on a poplar Ruggieri-model cello crafted in 2021 by Andrew Carruthers in California, and a purpleheart bow made in 2018 by Bernard Walke in Ottawa.
