About Ryan

Hi, I’m Ryan Carvalho. I’m an elite Digital SAT tutor and academic-performance coach with just about 14 years of experience in education, including work in high-performing Massachusetts academic environments such as Boston Latin, Brookline, and Newton.

I specialize in the full Digital SAT—Reading, Writing, and Math—and combine advanced test-prep strategy with psychology, executive-function support, mistake-pattern analysis, and highly structured instruction. I’ve coached hundreds of students and have consistently helped students produce major score gains, including 150–250+ point improvements, through a focused, data-driven approach built around accuracy, reasoning, and repeatable systems.

My students do not simply complete practice questions. They learn how the SAT works.

In Reading and Writing, I teach students how to recognize question types, identify trap answers, apply grammar rules precisely, analyze evidence, understand passage logic, and make decisions based on repeatable reasoning rather than guesswork.

In Math, I focus on conceptual mastery, efficient problem-solving, pattern recognition, strategic use of Desmos, algebraic reasoning, advanced math, problem solving and data analysis, geometry, and identifying the fastest reliable method for each question type.

Every student receives individualized instruction based on actual performance data. I analyze missed questions, recurring errors, timing problems, content gaps, and decision-making patterns to determine exactly what is limiting the score. From there, I build targeted lessons and practice designed to eliminate those weaknesses instead of wasting time on material the student already knows.

I also teach students how to review effectively. A missed question is not just something to correct—it is evidence. We determine why the mistake happened, what trap or misunderstanding caused it, and what specific rule or strategy will prevent it from happening again.

My background in psychology, special education, and executive-function coaching also allows me to work effectively with students who struggle with ADHD, autism, test anxiety, organization, pacing, focus, or inconsistent performance. High expectations remain the same; the instructional approach is adapted so the student can actually meet them.

Families choose me because I do not offer generic SAT tutoring. I build structured systems around the individual student, create targeted materials when needed, track progress, and teach strategies designed to transfer under real testing conditions.

Whether the goal is a major score increase, a highly competitive SAT score, stronger scholarship opportunities, or simply performing closer to a student’s true ability, my goal is the same: measurable improvement, greater independence, and a test-day process the student can trust.

About the lesson

My SAT lessons are built around a high-performance coaching model designed to improve accuracy, reasoning, efficiency, and consistency across the full Digital SAT—Reading, Writing, and Math.

I do not use a one-size-fits-all curriculum. Each student begins with targeted diagnostic work so I can identify the exact content gaps, question types, pacing issues, and mistake patterns limiting performance. From there, I build an individualized plan using official College Board material, Bluebook-style practice, targeted drills, and custom instruction based on the student’s actual data.

For Reading & Writing, students learn repeatable systems for:

• Information and Ideas, including main ideas, inferences, and command of evidence
• Words in Context and precision vocabulary
• Text Structure and Purpose
• Cross-Text Connections
• Rhetorical Synthesis and transitions
• Grammar, sentence boundaries, punctuation, and Standard English conventions
• Eliminating attractive trap answers through evidence-based reasoning
• Efficient pacing and decision-making under timed conditions

For Math, students develop mastery across:

• Algebra
• Advanced Math
• Problem Solving and Data Analysis
• Geometry and Trigonometry
• Equation setup and translation
• Functions and nonlinear relationships
• Strategic use of Desmos
• Pattern recognition and efficient solution methods
• Calculator vs. non-calculator decision-making
• Pacing and question prioritization

One of the biggest differences in my approach is how we handle mistakes. A wrong answer is not simply corrected and forgotten. We identify why it happened: a content gap, misread condition, trap answer, calculation error, weak setup, pacing decision, or faulty reasoning pattern. Then we build a specific fix so the same mistake becomes less likely to repeat.

Lessons may include direct instruction, guided practice, timed sets, error analysis, strategy refinement, homework, and progress tracking. Accuracy comes first. Once the student’s process becomes reliable, we layer in speed, timing, endurance, and full-test integration.

I also adapt instruction for students with ADHD, autism, executive-function challenges, test anxiety, or inconsistent performance without lowering expectations. The goal is to give each student a clear system they can understand, practice, and eventually execute independently.

The result is SAT preparation that is structured, individualized, and measurable—not endless worksheets, random practice, or memorized tricks.

The goal is simple: understand the test, eliminate recurring mistakes, build a reliable process, and perform closer to your true ability on test day.

My standard rate for SAT tutoring is $100 per hour for students meeting once per week.

For students who commit to two or more lessons per week, I offer a reduced package rate of $75 per hour. I strongly recommend twice-weekly preparation for students seeking meaningful score growth because it allows us to maintain momentum, reinforce new strategies quickly, review mistakes before they become habits, and make consistent progress between practice tests.

I bring the same level of preparation and individualized instruction to every session. My tutoring includes targeted lesson planning, official College Board practice, custom materials when needed, detailed mistake-pattern analysis, strategy development, pacing work, homework, and progress tracking.
