About Michael
I have over 20 years of tutoring and teaching experience in ESL. I believe in empowering others by passing on my knowledge and support so that they become better learners and thinkers in the long-term, and so that they are able to gain confidence in their ability to use English at a proficient level, whether in conversation, writing, or within academia.

I am a good listener and focus my energies on understanding the learner, their style of learning, and their learning needs. I believe we are all unique, that we all have the ability to master a subject area, and that we are able to succeed in learning.
A typical lesson starts with asking questions about the needs and desires of the student for that specific lesson. In other words, the focus is on understanding what the student desires to achieve during that session (and future sessions). The approach I take is tailored to the student's learning style and needs. For example, if the student feels that native English speakers have difficulty understanding them, then time is spent in the lesson 1) discussing where the student believes they have problems in pronunciation or prosody of the language, 2) followed by an assessment to pinpoint "problematic areas" in pronunciation/prosody, and 3) practicing pronunciation so that there is real-time feedback provided to the student about their sound production and how to improve it. The lesson may end with take-home exercises to practice on skills and techniques learned during the lesson.
I believe that understanding the student needs and that providing them with knowledge, practice, and support all go a long ways towards helping them build proficiency in using English, along with building the confidence that is necessary in using a second language.
