About Iris
Iris is a professionally trained Guzheng performer, educator, and ethnomusicology researcher with over 10 years of teaching experience in both China and the United States. She studied Musicology and Dance Studies at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China — one of the country’s leading conservatories for traditional and classical music. She later continued her graduate studies in Musicology at Florida State University in the United States and is currently pursuing a PhD in Ethnomusicology at the University of Aveiro in Portugal.
In addition to private teaching, Iris has taught Guzheng and Chinese ensemble courses at universities and has performed internationally in concerts, cultural festivals, and world music ensembles. Her background combines traditional Chinese music training with cross-cultural academic and performance experience, allowing her to work comfortably with students from diverse backgrounds.
Iris is known for her patient, encouraging, and personalized teaching style. Whether a student is learning Guzheng for cultural interest, artistic development, relaxation, or professional training, she aims to create a supportive and inspiring learning environment that makes Chinese music approachable and meaningful.

Iris’s lessons combine traditional Guzheng technique with musical expression, cultural understanding, and personalized guidance. With over 10 years of teaching experience in both China and the United States, she works with students of different ages, levels, and cultural backgrounds — from complete beginners to advanced learners interested in Chinese music and performance.
Her teaching approach is flexible and student-centered. A typical lesson may include posture and finger technique, repertoire practice, rhythm and musical interpretation, as well as introductions to the cultural and historical background of the music. For students interested in a deeper artistic experience, lessons can also include elements of Chinese aesthetics, traditional music appreciation, and performance expression.
What sets Iris apart is her international academic and performance background in ethnomusicology and Chinese traditional music.
