About Emily

My teaching approach is structured, engaging, and supportive. I guide students through a clear, step-by-step learning process, ensuring they understand not only what to do but why they are doing it. I explicitly model the "thinking aloud" strategy, demonstrating how successful readers and writers approach texts, analyse questions, and construct well-developed responses. This enables students to develop the confidence and independence to apply these skills in lessons and examinations.

Alongside building subject knowledge, I teach practical exam techniques that help students remain calm and focused under pressure. I share proven strategies for what to do if they go blank in an exam, showing them how to break questions into manageable steps, organise their ideas, and regain confidence. As an examiner, I also provide insider tips on what examiners are looking for and the common mistakes to avoid, helping students maximise every mark available.

I pride myself on creating a positive, supportive, and challenging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and are encouraged to think independently. My lessons are engaging, well-structured, and supported by a wealth of carefully selected resources, including model answers, exam-style questions, retrieval activities, and personalised revision materials. This allows me to adapt every lesson to suit each student's learning style and goals.

Parents and students value my professionalism, reliability, and commitment to helping every learner succeed. My goal is not only to improve grades but also to foster a genuine enjoyment of English, build resilience and self-belief, and equip students with the skills and confidence they need to achieve their full potential.

About the lesson

I am a highly experienced English teacher, Head of Department, and private tutor, specialising in KS3 and GCSE English Language and English Literature. With over six years of experience as a GCSE exam marker alongside six years of successful private tutoring, I have an in-depth understanding of the examination process and what examiners are looking for.

My lessons are carefully tailored to each student's individual needs, whether they require support in building confidence, strengthening core literacy skills, improving analytical writing, or achieving the highest GCSE grades. I have extensive experience teaching students of all abilities, from those needing additional support to high-achieving students aiming for Grades 8–9.

My teaching approach is engaging, supportive, and structured. I begin by identifying each student's strengths and areas for development before creating a personalised learning plan. Lessons combine clear explanations, guided practice, regular retrieval activities, model answers, and targeted feedback to ensure steady progress. I place a strong emphasis on developing exam technique, critical thinking, and independent writing skills, helping students gain both confidence and measurable improvements.

I have built a comprehensive bank of high-quality resources, including revision materials, practice questions, model responses, and exam-style activities, allowing me to adapt every lesson to suit different learning styles and goals.

Lessons typically last 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged if required, particularly during exam preparation periods.

My tutoring is suitable for:

KS3 students (Years 7–9)
GCSE English Language and English Literature students (Years 10–11)
Students of all abilities, from those needing additional support to those aiming for top grades
Students preparing for mocks, final GCSE examinations, or seeking to improve confidence and academic performance

My aim is to create a positive, encouraging learning
environment where students feel challenged, supported, and motivated to reach their full potential.

I have also supported students from a wide range of schools across St Albans, Harpenden, Welwyn Garden City, Potters Bar, and London, giving me experience of working with learners from diverse educational settings and backgrounds.

I've had face-to- face lessons with Emily, and she is honestly one of the most patient teachers l've ever had. I struggled for ages trying to learn a better vocabulary and get a better understanding of English as I mostly struggled with my language. Since I had my lessons with Emily, my grades have improved and ive build a wider understanding and structure for my GCSE exams.

Emily was the difference between me getting in to 6th form and not. She totally understood my strengths and weaknesses. She gave me confidence, something I never got from school. What I learnt didn’t just help with my English exams, it helped with all my exams.

Emily helped me achieve top grades in GCSE English Language and Literature by helping me develop independent analysis and creative writing skills. Initially, she led by example by demonstrating how to analyse different kinds of literature properly and write essays effectively. As I improved, she gradually encouraged me to develop my own ideas first and helped me channel them effectively, which is what I struggled with the most in English. She gave me constructive criticism on my independent work and gave me the knowledge and confidence I needed to achieve my potential in this subject.

I met Emily through my biology tutor, and I recommend her as she did a brilliant job teaching me English language for my GCSE! I struggled being in school full-time, and Emily did an amazing job at catching me up. We did our tuition sessions online on Teams, and there was barely any difference than doing it in person. Emily always sent me any resources I needed beforehand.

Emily was my tutor to help me with my English GCSE’s, and helped me greatly. She helped me go up 2 grades for both my English exams and was very helpful taking on what I said I needed help with, and different ways to approach different questions within the exams. She also went the extra step and found me booklets of different quotes, annotations, and themes for the texts my exams were on, which helped me greatly. I would definitely recommend Emily to anyone that is looking for a tutor.
