About Sid
Through Just Arting Around, I teach private painting parties to small groups in their homes or at my studio in Saint Paul.
Beginners are welcome—no "talent" required!
Everyone gets individual attention and is surrounded by friends and/or family rather than large groups of strangers. Just Arting Around parties are perfect for birthdays, family reunions, team-building events, bridal showers, friends' night outs, etc. I bring along with me everything needed for folks to tap into their inner artists in a fabulously fun party setting.
A professional dabbler in myriad art forms, I am an award-winning artist, actor, writer, dancer, etc. with 30+ years of teaching experience, the last three of which have been devoted to teaching acrylic painting on canvas.
I was taking art classes through another painting party company and found it frustrating to have a dozen blaring sports TVs overhead at a bar/restaurant, having only one teacher to 30+ students, and only two hours to complete a piece, which often didn't allow time for layers of paint to dry sufficiently for techniques to be properly applied. I decided to fill a niche for those who'd like a more intimate, relaxed atmosphere.
I have an education degree and have studied many forms of artistic expression. I taught high school English and writing for numerous years and taught social dance for seven years. I have won awards for my art (Blue Ribbon at the Bemidji Art Fair for my original sculpted jewelry); acting (trophy for "Best Dramatic Actress," as well as "Best Actress in a Zombie Movie" for my role in "Attack of the Moon Zombies"—no joke!); writing (Best Book of the Year for Self-Help 2010 from Premiere Publications for my book "Good Grief: Finding Peace After Pet Loss"; dancing (First place swing dance competition); and so forth. My artwork has been sought out for exhibition at Theatre in the Round, Courage Center, Phoenix Theater, etc.

I take time to make sure students are comfortable with creating art that is unique to them—not just performing paint-by-number-like tasks or "copying" the teacher. I encourage the use of colors that speak to them, then I provide step-by-step instruction as to techniques they can use to create their own masterpiece, personalizing it any way they choose. Encouragement, laughter, and self-expression are all parts of the Just Arting Around experience.
Everyone from a 6-year-old Make-a-Wish girl who was painting something for a fund-raiser to help her get to Disney World to a 96-year-old grandmother celebrating her birthday. (The former was a unique situation because I normally only work with small groups, typically 6–12 people—though I have worked with a church group of 32 people.) The average age range is from tweens/teens to 60s and above.
As I emphasize, beginners are welcome. No "talent" is necessary.
Trust me when I say you DO have an artist inside of you. We work together to turn off the inner critic's voice that we all possess. I take people past self-doubt into self-confidence.
I have become one family's go-to fun provider for their birthday parties. As soon as one class ends, another member of the family contacts me to set up another. I particularly enjoy my "repeat offenders" who come back again and again to expand their repertoire of skills and works of art. I love to see people blossom!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When choosing a design for your group to paint, determine the level of complexity the majority of the participants can handle. I note on my website whether things are EASY, INTERMEDIATE, or ADVANCED. I want everyone to feel success, not frustration. Even relatively simple designs can be augmented by the more advanced painter while not intimidating the newcomers. Feel free to ask me for advice about what has proven successful for groups in the past.

It was so easy to follow Sid's step by step instructions to paint my own masterpiece! I have no experience painting. She made it simple and fun! I also appreciate that Sid encourages individual creativity. Each painting was unique.

I took one class Swirly Trees at a local school adult class. It was a painting done after 50 years. It was fun and had a good picture to take home to.
It was so much fun! Sid guided us but let us put our own special twist to our pieces! We loved it so much we decided to book a birthday party for our 13 year old!! Sid is the BEST!!

Details
If the group comes to me at my studio in Saint Paul, the regular price is $40 per person for a three-hour class. If I come to them—within 20 miles of my studio, it's $55 (a bit more for destinations further away).
However, I frequently run specials wherein I charge a flat rate of $25 per person. Anyone who mentions that special rate can receive it any time.
