About Christopher
My entire academic and professional life, I've worked as a music orchestrator and librarian. The most satisfying feeling in the world is working with your favorite musical groups and hearing them play something that you made possible for them.
I have been following these passions since I was a middle schooler, way back in 2003. I decided to make it my career goal a few years later in high school, and I've never regretted that decision.
I was a young ensemble librarian in middle and high school, at William Blount starting in 2003 and following through to my graduation in 2009. I studied Music Education briefly at the University of Tennessee and was a librarian & orchestrator for the university's Tuba Ensemble. After that, I moved to Youngstown State University to pursue Music Composition, and my passion for ensemble orchestration and librarianship followed. I finished my undergraduate degree path at Maryville College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. While at Maryville, I served as the orchestral librarian, orchestrater and arranger for campus ensembles, and Assistant Conductor for the Community Orchestra. After graduation, I joined the amazing team at Appalachia: Southeastern Wind Symphony as the staff ensemble librarian and orchestrator. Despite leaving the area and no longer being able to serve as librarian, the Wind Symphony still reaches out to me when music is needed.
In my opinion, music orchestration is a field in music that rarely gets talked about, but is just as vital of a skill to hone as composition or arranging or transcription. It is a refined art form that many young musicians - myself included - are often dissuaded from following because it "isn't as 'serious' as composition." That is simply not true, and I'm here to help reveal musical passions and ideas like this by helping as many musicians as possible.
The process of orchestration is absolutely second nature and mechanical for me; my keystrokes in Sibelius come as naturally as a writer using a word document processor or typewriter. I can get lost for hours and just make new variations of music happen. But the real thrill of my job? That happens when I sit down off-stage at a rehearsal or stand in front of an ensemble and wave my hands - I get to hear the magic happen. All those hours that I spent tapping away on my computer are now real. No artificial instrument can give you the same goosebumps that hearing your music live can achieve, even if it's not "new" music. Every young musician that loves arranging or orchestrating should know that there IS a place for them in the wide world of music, and they are not limited to just one degree path at one school.
I actually began teaching private music lessons at my local middle school, straight out of high school. My primary instrument is tuba, but by that point I had picked up on the rest of the brass instruments, so I jumped on an opportunity to help younger musicians. Through my time in college, I've served as a music theory tutor for levels 1 through 4, and even have some crazy advanced theories that are fun to study. This, however, would be my first endeavor into teaching my specific craft.
I have worked as a collegiate and professional orchestrator since my undergraduate journey began in 2009, and upon graduation in 2018 I still managed to work with local ensembles, including the Appalachia: Southeastern Wind Symphony. Though I started down this path feeling like a stressed-composer, I realized that I had a different set of skills that often benefits music ensembles behind the scenes.

I like to question new students to see what they already know, listen to works that they've already started or completed, and ultimately just pick their brain to see who they are as a musician. Music orchestration relies heavily on an advanced understanding of music theory, so I like to help students understand how and why music functions the way it does, too. Orchestration is a skill that can often feel natural, but when pressed to compose original music, a student might feel panicked or stressed that they can shape existing music but not create new music - and they need to learn that that is ok, and is actually an entirely separate skillset that can be honed.
Primarily middle school brass students, and college level theory students
Don't let a teacher make you feel bad because you aren't learning as quickly or because what you're doing isn't verbatim what they want. I tried to make myself become a composer because composition professors always told me that I would only ever be taken seriously as a professional if I created new music and broke boundaries and tore down walls. Colleagues laughed in my face when I took piano etudes and orchestrated them for quintets or string orchestras. But if you have a knack for it, don't get bullied into thinking you have to conform to one specific degree or study path. There are professional options, and you can pursue what you're really passionate about, no matter what any other teacher - myself included - says.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do you enjoy doing? What are you good at? What do you already know? Are there things that you don't know yet that you think could be beneficial? What are your options? Did you know that options like this exist (that is to say, music academia is MORE than just Education, Performance, and Composition)? What do you enjoy doing so much that even if it was your career, you could fit into it on your own without a company pulling your strings and make a living doing it, and still be happy? And most importantly, what is it that you actually want or need, and will that teacher work with you with the accomodations that you need to achieve that goal? Will that teacher get on your level and help you grow?
