About Evan
I am a bassoonist living in Akron, Ohio who regularly gigs with chamber music as well as large ensembles in the Northeast Ohio area. I am a member of professional level and community orchestras in Ohio including but not limited to the Tuscarawas Philharmonic, Stow Symphony, Suburban Symphony, Cleveland Philharmonic and others. I also am a member of a folk band and play in several wind bands. My first teacher, Russell Hinkle who I studied with for six years from elementary to high school in Cincinnati has started many students to go on and win major orchestra jobs with his bachelor's and master's degrees from the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. My undergraduate and graduate bassoon professor from Cleveland State University and Kent State University, Mark DeMio is a regular performer in the Cleveland Orchestra on 2nd Bassoon and Contrabassoon with his bachelor's and master's degrees from The Cleveland Institute of Music. Mr. DeMio has taught many students who have won positions in orchestras and colleges around the U.S. I am currently playing bassoon in the top ensembles and getting a second master's in Arts Administration at the University of Akron with Professor Cynthia Cioffari, who has a full time position in Contrabassoon in the Columbus Symphony. She has had numerous students who have won positions as performers as well as college positions all around the country.
In my work I enjoy getting to work with aspiring children and adults and see them learn something new about themselves. I like unlocking the desire for creativity however dormant it may be in someone's life in order to enrich their experience. I am happy for my students to live a fun life with this wonderful and unusual instrument.
I began teaching when my friend at the Barberton School District asked me to come teach their district.

I teach the basics of sound production and breathing. If the student has played other instruments before, I compare and contrast the technical aspects to provide a smooth transition to bassoon.
I work with students grades 6-12.
I teach adults of all ages including the elderly.
My advice to a student looking to hire a bassoon teacher is to check their experience and who they studied with to determine their verification.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students need to be always willing to consider what they may be doing wrong and ask questions without shame so as to give the teacher an idea of their goals. The teacher will assess what growth can be achieved from those goals as well as push those goals further.
