About Annette
Worked for Scholastic Publishing Company in the Education Division for over 24 years. The experience and knowledge acquired speaks for itself. One of the assignments I volunteered for at Scholastic was participating in a program called Scholastic Reads. We went into 2nd grade classrooms with classroom sets of 3 books to read and them distribute to the students. This was to assist the students in building their home libraries. This sparked my desire to tutor elementary students. I was able to master various ways to engage my tutees.
When a student does well in a subject they may have had difficulty in, they develop confidence in themselves. I believe that is the most joyful experience for anyone that tutors. Seeing that smile when a student sees the results of a test taken or report card that shows their improvement.
I have a daughter that just graduated from high school. She has a physical challenge. I have taken the experience that I have learned over the course of time to assist her. She is in a wheelchair, but I helped her to understand that if she wants to succeed and meet her goals she can. She graduated this year as valedictorian.
Seeing joy and confidence displayed on a student's face (or any child) is so important to me.

Getting to know the student. We really need to establish a comfortable working partnership. We are new to each other. Have them open up to tell me what their likes and dislikes are. I take their likes and find ways to incorporate them into their lesson. I also like to use singing to help retain information. They also need to learn about me. Tutoring should be fun, not stressful. We want the students to continue so that they can meet their goals and the goals of their parents or guardians.
