About Priscilla

I have been private tutoring for two years now and have spent time during the school year student teaching at Lincoln Middle School in Wheaton, IL. Not only do I have experience in tutoring, but I have given swim lessons for five years. This helps me in trying to find methods of how to explain material as well as exposure to teaching a wide variety of ages. Being able to think fast is helpful in teaching because many times a student might not understand a concept, but instead of giving up, I can find another way to explain the concept to them. In this way, I can present the topics in as many ways as it takes until they are able to understand. I currently work for the college newspaper as copy editor. My job consists of going through the articles written and making grammatical fixes as well as making sure the structure of the article makes sense.

I like to see the way in which people make progressions while studying and the sense of growth they have and also that I get to experience with them. After student teaching for a semester, I enjoyed the connections I was able to make with the students and the way the students liked English more because they could understand what was being asked of them. Many students who do not have interest in English keep a bias that English is not for them and is not a worthwhile subject to learn. I like to challenge that opinion and help them see how English is helpful within real life concepts.

I worked at Eye Level Tutoring Center as an English tutor. My position there was to teach students how to read and write, how to interpret reading comprehension, and how to create solid essays. During the school year, I worked as a student teacher at Lincoln Middle School. There I would teach a class as well as help the teacher in any way she needed help for the day.

About the lesson

I like to see where the student is at in their current study of English. Then building off of that, I look into areas where they need to improve and work on strengthening those areas before moving onto more complex areas of writing and literature.
