Words are one of Ms. Jeannie’s favored forms of expression and introspection. A lifelong learner of languages and cultures, Ms. Jeannie spends her time outside work writing short stories and poems and developing a platform for students to exchange writing feedback as well as offering 1-on-1 or 2-on-1 guidance in various subject areas. She also practices Italian on Busuu and DuoLingo.

Prior to designing curricula and guiding student growth at Talent Unbound, the acclaimed Acton Academy in Katy, TX, Ms. Jeannie taught seventh grade reading and writing at KIPP Sharpstown in Houston where she also designed her own curricula.

In another life, she worked in valuation advisory and investment management in Los Angeles and Shanghai.

On SAT/ACT prep:

Ms. Jeannie has been teaching the SAT since 2004. The curriculum Ms. Jeannie uses is a combination of the course she has taken and the curriculum she devised while teaching. Unlike institutions that focus only on preparing students for entrance exams, she offers an integrated consultancy from writing essays and activities lists to coaching students for college interviews.

On job search preparation:

Ms. Jeannie teaches integrated adult classes to help individuals on their job search. This ranges from financial modeling on Excel and cover letter-writing to interview prep and case studies.

Ms. Jeannie is fluent in English and Korean and conversational in Spanish and Chinese.

I have always loved my relationships with teachers, which set the foundation for my perspective of teaching. My first experience teaching was teaching SAT as a college student, and that was a deeply positive, lasting experience; it has been over a decade, and I still stay in touch with some of my students.

About the lesson

I don't want to be the teacher unless I am the right person for the student. Once we get connected, we have an initial call to determine whether to move forward, and if so, with which goals and at what pace. Clear expectations are key to accomplishing goals.

I have worked with all ages with the youngest being 3 and the oldest being adults. I have taught K-5 and middle school in classrooms and have tutored high school and college students for over a decade.

Set your SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, rigorous, timely) goals first, and determine what your expectations of the necessary work is each day/week. Have your teacher comment on whether s/he agrees with the SMARTness of your goal(s) and can help you achieve them.

:) I love teaching and do it on the side but have a career separate from it. Recently (July 2020), I received two job offers on the same day.

The lessons are based on your own skill sets. I came in with now experience and now I have more experience in the language. Just to point out, it takes a lot of determination and persistent to study language so I do recommend sticking to a set schedule for self study. Even if it's just one hour a day before the next lesson, it makes a difference. You are able to set flexible times to meet. Also, if you need help during your self-study, you are able to message through a Korean platform called Kakaotalk. Jeannie has been my tutor for three months now and I learned more about the Korean language then I did when I was trying to learn by myself. I 100% recommend her as a tutor for anyone who is interested in learning Korean language.

Jeannie customizes the language lessons and bases them on practical interactions. My son says he is learning more and understanding more with Jeannie than he did taking traditional group language classes. My standard rate is $90/hour for HS and $70/hr for middle school with $10-20 for driving; I strongly prefer that the student comes to my teaching site or that we meet online.
