About Kristen

An important part of creating successful learning experiences for my students is going back to the basics to figure out what kind of learner I am working with. My approach to instruction, whether it is in a classroom full of students or one-on-one tutoring, is to get to know each student and discover the unique funds of knowledge each person is bringing to the table.

A little bit about me:

I have spent the last 10+ years working with children, developing a passion for child development along the way. My own struggles as a k-12 student inspired me to help students realize their full potential, and ultimately led me to start a career in education. I am a recent graduate of the University of Southern California, where I earned a Masters degree in Teaching and completed the teaching requirements for a California multiple subjects credential. This program was delivered entirely online (with the exception of the in-classroom student teaching portion), which had the added benefit of preparing me for virtual instruction.

My professional experience in childcare, human resources, and classroom instruction have equipped me with the following skills and qualifications:

- a wide range of practical instruction methods to help students of all ages, learning differences, and backgrounds to access material

-familiarity with national and state (California) academic standards (k-6)

-thorough understanding of learning theory

-experience designing lesson plans that ensure differentiated instruction

-experience with multiple curriculum frameworks and instruction models

In addition to the above, I am dedicated to understanding each student as an individual and utilizing their strengths to reach specific learning goals. Learning can be challenging, but it should never feel impossible! Let me help you (or your child) get over the roadblocks!

I have extensive experience in childcare for children ranging in age from newborn to junior high school. My duties included supporting each child in their cognitive, physical, social-emotional, and academic development.

My education includes a BA in Psychology and a MA in Teaching. Additionally, I have completed all requirements for a California multiple subjects (k-8) teaching credential and am currently awaiting the final evaluation and distribution of the certificate. My student teaching was completed at the elementary school level and included a combination of in-classroom and virtual instruction.

About the lesson

1) Get to know each other!

I always spend time getting to know new students to discover as much as I can about their individual learning needs. Ensuring each student feels comfortable with me and their environment is a vital first step to creating a positive learning space. During this time, specific learning goals will be addressed.

As a tutor of k-8 students, I find it to be very helpful to gather information from members of the family/household who have valuable insight about the student's strengths, learning style, and areas of opportunity.

This first step should not take a lot of time and can be accomplished via email, texts, phone calls, live virtual meetings.

2) I will administer an initial evaluation to each student to help me see where and how my support can best be utilized

My formal instruction has taken place in the kindergarten, third, and fourth grade levels. My students came from diverse backgrounds and presented a wide range of learning differences, including english learners, students eligible for special education, and gifted students.

My standard rate is $50 per hour

Cancellation policy:

Appointments must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance in order to avoid being charged.

*Appointments cancelled with at least 24 hours notice will not be charged for the appointment

*Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be charged 50% regular rate

*No shows will be charged 100% regular rate
