About Audrey

Rather than using a template or schedule right out the gate, I prefer to set up an intro meeting with students (and their guardians, if possible) to better understand the student's needs, goals and background. It's crucial that when getting educational help, students feel that their unique style of learning is being considered

What I enjoy about this job is empowering students to trust their own capability and knowledge. Everyone needs help and everyone is smart!

I have a B.A. in Linguistics, with a focus in it's application to education, language learning and social justice. In college I also studied journalism, political science and general communication studies. All through high school, I took AP/advanced English and History courses

I have tutored spelling, reading, English, math, science and general test prep off and on for several years.

About the lesson

I was tutoring a student in math and they were learning complex subtraction. They were having trouble with some problems and I asked to see their process. They showed me the problem and solved it the way they said their teacher taught them. I offered a new approach to setting up a subtraction equation, that helps students see which numbers are being affected by other numbers, and it really helped the student! They were able to speed through the rest of their homework. I was very excited that the student felt empowered in their knowledge, and it was just an issue of visualizing the problem that was getting in the way

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students (and/or parents) should write down the three biggest outcomes they hope to get with tutoring: Doing well on an upcoming test, placing into a class/program, finding out new learning resources, understanding a certain topic better, extra help where the school/teachers may not be able to provide, extra time/space for study session, etc.

Once a student identifies why they want tutoring for themselves, it makes the learning process more approachable and enjoyable!
