About Robbie
I teach music as a language. Understanding music is imperative before sheet music is introduced, much like you learned to speak and communicate before you learned to read and write. Every single person that wants to be musical should have access to music regardless of their aptitude with sheet music (i.e. notation). Remember- all music that is notated first originated in the minds of musicians. And many of the greats never used or needed notation, including all four Beatles, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and many, many more. If they could ascend to the highest levels of songwriting and performance without notation, then why can't you? I'd like to note that I am not anti-notation and I can read sheet music. I just believe in a comprehensive understanding of music no matter what path you choose. What good is being great at reading sheet music if when you take it off the piano, you wind up sitting in front of a piece of furniture? I'll help you learn to develop your own voice and speak the language of music and of songs. And the more curious you are, the farther you will go. Let's get started today!

BIOGRAPHY:
Robbie Gennet is a multi-instrumentalist musician, songwriter, educator and journalist living in Los Angeles, CA. He's recorded and toured both solo and with his own bands and played as a sideman with acts as diverse as Nick Lachey, Lisa Marie Presley, Fuel, Everclear and 7Mary3.
An award-winning piano player, Robbie has released numerous instructional books and DVD's and has been writing and hosting videos for major music magazines including Musician, Gig, Guitar Player, Bass Player and Keyboard Magazine.
I love to give musicians their own voice on their instrument and turn them into players. I enjoy stoking the fires of creativity and imagination in students of all ages. I love chords and enjoy giving songwriters a complete understanding of how they work. I enjoy teaching classical students the world outside of classical. But I most enjoy teaching curious students, for they progress the fastest.
I taught privately for years but when I wrote the manuscript for the Key of One, that is when I got more serious. I was in essence reverse engineering my own understanding and abilities in music so I could explain them. I have since mapped out the entirety of chords and how they work and explored the physics of chord movement.
I have been teaching at Musicians Institute in Hollywood for the past 6 years. I've also written and published my own book/DVD called The Key of One with Alfred Publishing, as well as written books and hosted DVD's for Hal Leonard. I'm a musicologist, a historian and I'm insatiably curious about music and musicians. I've toured extensively and worked in studios big and small. The life experiences I've had are invaluable to teaching music and teaching musicians how to be in and maintain bands.

Every student is different so I like to get to know their history as well as their dreams and goals. I can help anyone reach beyond their musical dreams, from beginners to advanced musicians and songwriters in a rut. I specialize in chords and love using songs to learn and understand them.
I have worked with students from beginner kids to older retirees. I have taught an international clientele at Musicians Institute, which has afforded me a lot of opportunities to apply my teaching to people with vastly different backgrounds. My preference is to teach students who are insatiably curious, as well as advanced musicians in a rut and classical musicians who want to understand music outside of their realm.
I am a very different teacher than all the rest in that I do not use any notation or sheet music in my lessons. There are a wealth of things to discuss and examine about music to understand it as a language and develop your own voice. Whether you go on to reading notation or choose not to use it, I can give you a complete understanding of songs made of chords, which is most of the music that has been written since 1900. I can help you develop your ear and better your ability to figure out songs quickly, as well as understand their changes to apply to your own toolbelt in your musical workshop. And if you're interested, I can teach you how to be a true rock and roll piano/keyboard player. I also teach guitar and bass and I use the piano keyboard to explain things to students back on thier instruments. I also love teaching drummers more about songwriting and chords so they can be a part of the band writing and speak the language.
I go to a lot of concerts and am always trying to see live bands and musicians. And then there are times when I get to play myself, such as recently when I was recording on a session at the famous East/West Studios in Hollywood. I toured the room where Pet Sounds was recorded and got to play Frank Sinatra's Steinway piano. I had a lot of goosebumps for sure!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Curiosity (along with adaptability and flexibility) is the hallmark of all great musicians. If you are a naturally curious person, you will excel at music. Those who are curious and compelled make the greatest strides in becoming the best musicians we can be. Everyone should have the ability to be musical, regardless of the level they aspire to. Not everyone wants to be a professional and that is quite alright. I would like to help you become the greatest musician you can be no matter what your aspiration.
The freedom of being able to express yourself on an instrument will give you boundless opportunities to perform the music you want to play and even make up some of your own. The information is simple, but when buried under the task of learning the language of notation, it's almost impossible to see. I separate the song from the sheet music and teach you how to hear it, understand it and play it as freely as the language you speak. Once you learned your ABC's and 123's in elementary school, you moved on to a lifetime of thinking, speaking and expressing yourself. Music is a universal language that everyone should be able to speak!

Details
I price my lessons depending on the student but typically I like to start with a 1.5hr masterclass which I price at $100 in my local area and slightly more depending on travel distance. I also do Skype and Facetime lessons, though being side by side at the piano is much more preferable. I am happy to work out packages of lessons to bring the costs down or do single masterclasses to give a solid conceptualization of music to a student no matter what age/level.
