About Suzanne

Hello ! My name is Suzanne Shockley and I have been teaching children with special needs, ages preschool through middle school all of my teaching career . I have multiple experiences in a variety of techniques and strategies in order to help your child learn and achieve his or her goals. I pride myself in reaching these goals using research based instruction as well as incorporating fun and multi-sensory experiences into our sessions. I retired after 22 years with the Central Bucks School District and am able to tutor your child in all subject areas. I am very comfortable with children on the autism spectrum, ADD/ADHD, Asperger's and PDD/NOS. I have extensive experience with managing behaviors and use a variety of strategies to help children learn. I have my master's degree in special education and have completed one year towards my doctorate. I am tech savvy, using a laptop and iPad to enhance and motivate children to learn. I love seeing that spark or "ah ha" moment when a child attains a math concept, writes a well constructed sentence or decodes and comprehends a reading passage. I enjoy the personal connection created through one on one learning and using a child's strengths to build a relationship in which the child feels good about learning. I look forward to working with your child and watching them learn!

Always knew I wanted to teach and have lived every minute of it.

I have been teaching special education students for over 20 years in the public school system of Central  Bucks.  I have been an inclusion teacher who understands the curriculum of elementary students. I was a cohort in a doctoral program for special ed and am very comfortable working with children who have poor attention, lack motivation, or are struggling to grasp concepts at their grade level.  I have taught children with autism exclusively which gives me insight for being patient and understanding.  I am an out of the box thinker and believe that if a child is not learning, it is due to my not finding the right methods of instruction, NOT a child's inability to learn.

I begin with a complimentary introduction for our first session to chat and get to know the student. We might discuss the goals for tutoring, depending on the child's age.  I then demonstrate what tutoring looks like, using engaging, confidence building strategies to put the child at ease. I show them interactive games and fun lessons to show them that learning can be fun.  I ask them about themselves, what they like to do and find out what motivates them so I can use these interests to incorporate them into my lesson.  Finally, we talk about and create some basic expectations to follow during our sessions and ask the child to agree to those expectations.  Once we establish this rapport, I am confident it will be smooth sailing for future learning!

General ed,(neurotypical) grades k through 3, special ed, grades k -5, autism, Asperger's, PDD, PDD-NOS, Down's syndrome, ADD,ADHD and ESL

Look for someone who uses research based materials, has an understanding of materials and resources to assure learning, is prompt, prepared and ready to begin upon arrival and is easy going, flexible, patient and understanding. The tutor should be able to pivot and reteach using alternative methods as the need arises.

A student of mine exclaiming that "I thought this would be awful, but you make it fun!"
Another student thanked me for "being nice".
And finally, a very young student who was struggling through a session and smiling after accomplishing a difficult task.
When tutoring in person I often incorporate sports like table hockey and trash can basketball for drill and practice routines.   I often do brain breaks using movement and songs.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is it that you hope to accomplish? What measurable, tangible goals do you hope to achieve and in what amount of time do you want this goal to be accomplished by?

What methods or strategies will you use to help me learn?
