About Kyle

First and foremost, I really care about building a good relationship with my students. I offer my first session FREE so we can spend some time talking about expectations, goals, and so you can get an idea of what it will be like to work with me. I really want to make sure you are getting the help you need. If you feel you'd be better helped with another tutor, then that's just fine! At ANY time while we're tutoring, you can tell me, "Hey, I don't think this tutoring thing is working out." While I often develop pretty good friendships with my students, I also acknowledge the student-tutor thing is a professional and working relationship.

Second, I have a love for helping students succeed in mathematics and physics! I know math and physics can be a bit scary and difficult, but I always strive to be supportive and build confidence in my students. I've had some students start to really like math after I worked with them. I don't know if I can take full credit for that, but I'd like to think I contributed!

Third, this is not my firs rodeo. I have 4 years of experience as a private tutor and I have tutored online as well as in person. I have tools to make both online and in person tutoring enriching and productive. I also have experience working with students with learning disabilities like ADHD, dislexia, discalculia, and others. I am patient, compassionate, and I strive to adapt my teaching style to best serve ALL of my students.

Fourth, I have the credentials. I graduated at the top of my class with a Bachelor's Degree in Physics and I have worked on several research projects. That means I understand not only how to effectively use mathematics and physics in the classroom, but in the real world as well! I also am currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Applied and Computational Mathematics with Johns Hopkins University.

Here's my linkedin profile so you can get an idea of some of my other professional accomplishments and who I am: (concealed information)

I look forward to working with you!

My absolute favorite thing is the "lightbulb" moment when someone "gets it". It is incredibly rewarding to see things click in a student's mind and see them totally own a math problem that used to give them trouble.

B.S. in Physics from Utah Valley University (May 2018)

M.S. in Applied and Computational Mathematics from Johns Hopkins University (in progress)

I like to talk over at least a couple of things:

1) Goals -- I want to make sure I understand what you need help with.  My preparation and approach will be different if your goal is to learn something new and get ahead than if you just need help with homework in a class.

2) Logistics -- I want to make sure that your schedule and my schedule match up enough to make something work out long term so you're getting the help you need.

3) Human Factors -- If you have a learning disability or are going through a tough time in life, it helps for me to know so I can best accomodate you.  I'm not out to make your life harder than it needs to be - my aim is to be helpful.

I have worked with all kinds of students from ages 12-50.  A few examples:

--I've tutored in residential treatment centers with teens who have moderate to severe mental, behavioral, and/or learning disabilities

--I've tutored middle-aged students who are often going back to school to finish or earn a new degree

--I've helped many college students from a variety of majors (Systems Engineering, Biology, Business, Economics, Computer Science, Nursing, just to name a few)

This is kind of general advice, but I think it's the most important.  Your relationship with your teacher is just as important as your teacher's credentials.

Here's what I mean.  Subject matter expertise is important, but not enough.  You should seek out someone fun to work with who will help you to enjoy the subject.  You should also look for someone who can empathize with your learning struggles.  The curse of knowledge is REAL -- some people are naturally good at doing things but not at explaining how to do them, or at helping you feel comfortable learning.

Here is my rate breakdown:

$50/hr -- Private teaching.  This price includes in session time and time I spend prepping and grading quizzes.  Lesson prep time is included in this rate.

$35/hr -- Homework help

$35/hr -- Test prep math (you provide a book and I can help you learn how to work out problems quickly)

I round all of my lessons to the nearest 5 minute mark on the clock.

For example, if we scheduled an hour session but we were both on fire and got everything done in 42 minutes, I'm only going to charge for 40 minutes of that hour.  Your time is just as valuable as mine.
