About Melanie

Does your child get nervous when it is time for math, or do you? Maybe they hide their math papers in the bottom of their backpack or crumple up their math homework when they are frustrated. I understand how that feels. I struggled in math when I was a student, too! But that is what makes me a really great math tutor. I taught myself math so that it made sense to me and now I teach my students math so it makes sense to them. Not everyone learns the same way so not every student should be taught the same way. Does your child like art? Well, we can draw math! Does your child like music? Well, then we will sing math! Does your child like building things? Then we will build math! Pretty soon they will be proud to show off their math grades and they will no longer dread math homework. Who knows? They might even start to Love Math!

Most teachers would say they enjoy the "light bulb" moments the most, when a child grasps a concept for the first time. And, of course those experiences are very exciting for both the student and the teacher. But, for me, the most enjoyable thing about tutoring elementary students in math is watching their confidence grow. Typically, when a child starts tutoring, they are hesitant, frustrated, defeated, or even angry. That is when my experience and compassion come into play. Knowing that it can be the subtle things that make all the difference in the world is incredibly important. Easing a child's fears over asking a question, helping a child to talk through a math problem, and encouraging them to admit when they do not know the answer are all huge accomplishments for a child who struggles with math. These changes may take longer to develop but, once they do, they will positively impact every learning situation, not just math. As a teacher and tutor, I will celebrate every "lightbulb" moment with your child, but the greatest joy will come when your child realizes they can do and learn anything.

Teaching has been a part of my nature since I was a child. My parents were both gifted educators and I am fortunate to follow in their footsteps. When my children entered elementary school, I served as Home Room Parent in their classes. Then I was asked to become the Teaching Assistant for the 2nd grade level at their school. At the end of that year, the principal and 3rd grade team asked if I would accept a full time 3rd grade teaching position. I was deeply honored by their trust in me, especially since I had no official teaching credentials. I was accepted to a Masters Degree Teaching Program immediately thereafter and began attending my first teaching classes the week before I stepped into my first classroom. The principal and the 3rd grade team took a risk in hiring an inexperienced teacher but I think they saw something in me that gave them confidence in my abilities. My students all performed above expectations that first year and I graduated from my Masters Degree Program one year later with a 4.0 grade level.

As an elementary level tutor, I begin by asking the parent questions which will help to determine the best approach for supporting their child. How does your child feel about math? Does your child's teacher express any particular concerns about your child's progress in math? Does your child receive any additional support at school? What would you wish for your child in relation to their math education? After getting a good picture of the child's status, I administer a skills assessment to evaluate the child's strengths and weaknesses in the various math content areas applicable to the student's age and grade level. Based on the information gleaned from the assessment, tutoring will be focused initially on developing the requisite foundational skills and then we will move to achieving mastery in the content areas of concern. The tutoring sessions will utilize the student's optimal learning style and will address the parent's goals for the child's education.

As a teacher in a public school, I was fortunate to work with students at all ability levels. This included students identified with learning disabilites such as dyslexia, hearing impaired students who required teaching modifications, gifted and talented students who needed above grade level curriculum and instruction, and students in the Special Education program who had been diagnosed as autistic or who were otherwise impaired. In all cases, and with all students, my strategy was the same: find and apply the learning approach that worked best for them, build their confidence by giving them frequent opportunities to succeed, and establish a solid, trusting relationship which allowed them to take risks without fear. Every child is unique and possesses both strengths and weakness and they all deserve a teacher who believes in them.

My advice to both parents and students is that they look for a teacher who knows their stuff but one who can also build a rapport and connection with the student.  A student will be more successful with a teacher who has faith in their abilities, who respects and finds joy in their individuality, and who knows learning does not have to be boring.

I am currently helping my son and my sister restore a farmhouse built in 1895. By the end of every weekend we can barely move, we are covered in dirt and paint and other things I don't want to think about, and we are having so much fun. My son is a biomedical engineer so this project was completely out of his comfort zone when he started. Being able to work alongside my son while he is mastering new skills like installing plumbing and  using a nail gun (his favorite) continues to be an absolute joy.

The hourly rate for my tutoring services is $45. If the student requires shorter sessions, the charge will be $25 per half hour. All classes are conducted online in order to benefit from the greatest possible variety of resources and to maximize instructional time.

Depending on the student's circumstances, and in order to maintain forward progress, I have found the best results occur when sessions are consistently scheduled to allow for a minimum of 1-2 hours of instruction per week.
