About Olivia
I'm an energetic and engaged teacher. I've taught students with varying comprehension and confidence levels, from eager kindergartners to college students struggling to get through their required classes. No matter where they're starting, I work with students to identify areas that need to be mastered while building confidence along the way. I've worked with children with learning disabilities, autistic children, advanced and gifted children, college students, adult learners, and more. For me, the most rewarding part of being a tutor is experiencing the moment when a concept “clicks” for a student.
Teaching is the most rewarding job. I love assisting students to succeed and thrive when they've previously struggled with a subject or concept. One of my previous students was in 9th grade, working through algebra 1. He struggled with staying focused in the classroom. He was easily distracted during class and, as a result, was failing the course. Once he was in a one-on-one setting with me, he was able to focus. He started to understand the concepts and get his homework in on time. He started passing his quizzes and exams, often with an A or B. Being a conduit for success is the reason I teach.
I began my teaching journey while completing engineering school. While working through my numerous math-based courses, I started assisting fellow students that were floundering. In the process, I fell in love with teaching. I've taught students with varying comprehension and confidence levels, from eager kindergartners to college students struggling to get through their required classes. I've worked successfully with students who are autistic, have learning disabilities, gifted and advanced students, college students, and adult learners. No matter where they're starting, I help my students identify the skills and knowledge they need in order to continue forward with confidence. My favorite part of teaching is watching students succeed and thrive when they've struggled with a subject or concept.

I like to start with a phone consult to address what the student is looking to achieve with tutoring and see if we will be a good fit.
I then ask that the student emails me homework (current or old) and previous exams. This will allow me to understand which concepts the student is struggling with.
Based on the schedule of the student, we will set up weekly meetings to address the student's needs.
I have experience with all age groups. I have taught kindergarteners and first-graders while in costume and college students working through their mathematics requirements.
My favorite success story involves an adult student who was in his final year of college and finishing up his degree in order to work up at his current job. He had taken a finite math course required for graduation twice already and had failed both times. He was discouraged and lacked confidence in his math skills and in himself. It had been several years since he'd taken any math courses, but he was determined to pass this last course and graduate the following semester. We started by rebuilding some foundational math concepts to give him the knowledge that he needed. We worked together for the entire semester and put in a lot of long hours. By the end of his course, he passed the class with a "B" grade and was able to graduate on time with a lot of hard work and determination.
