About Katie

I have ten years of tutoring experience, with topics including math and the sciences. I've also worked with children from ages 4 through high school in a variety of roles: swim instructor, swim coach, informal education, etc. I graduated from Princeton University as an environmental engineer in 2016, so I have a very strong background in math and science.

I'm ready to start tutoring now and I have a very flexible schedule.

I love working with kids and helping them understand what we're doing, whether that's a new swim technique or how to complete a homework assignment. The best part of any tutoring session is the "aha!" moment when the child finally understands what we're working on. With my experience, I've had practice figuring out many different ways to help children reach that point because not everyone learns the same way.

I started tutoring in high school when my teachers asked if I could work with other students.

I have an engineering degree from Princeton University, so I have a strong background in math and science. I also worked as an education presenter at Disney World for two years and was trained in informal education techniques there. I just returned from my time as a naturalist at the University of Georgia's campus in Costa Rica, again working with informal education techniques and teaching people about the world in which we live.

About the lesson

I like to start with a conversation with both the parents and the child about why they're seeking tutoring, what they're hoping to gain from working together, and what experience they've had with tutors in the past. From there, I assess how the child approaches the subject generally and try to figure out where the issues might be. Once I understand how a child is thinking about the topic, I can formulate a plan to help them improve their work.

I've worked with a variety of students, mostly in middle school and high school.

Katie always made it a mission to help me understand the concepts we were reviewing. She helped me in many subjects. For example, precalculus, organic chemistry, biology and more. She was always a text away for a simple question, or offered to jump on a zoom call if necessary. If I wasn't understanding things, she would find new ways to explain until she found a way that clicked for me. She was incredibly accommodating, personable, and kind. Katie tutored me for two years and helped me immensely. Katie and I used zoom for the two years she tutored me and I never once felt like she was not giving me her all because we could not be in person. For subjects that were out of her comfort zone, she would review and study on her own before we met, and then attempt to teach me everything I needed to know (which she was always successful). My grades and GPA jumped once Katie and I started working together.
