About Matthew
Matt Attfield, a prominent musician armed with a charismatic attitude and a trombone, has been rushing toward the spotlight of the jazz industry with his impressive performances as both leader and sideman. Travelling across the United States and even extending into foreign territory, Attfield has provided jazz entertainment for a wide variety of venues and audiences. American Jazz pianist Willie Pickens has described his music as containing “Nice tone quality“ with ”great conception”, a testimony to the quality of Attfield’s performances.
Born and raised in the roaring Niagara Falls, NY to mother Anne Oliveri and father James Attfield, Matt has been playing the trombone since the 7th grade. He first recalls his recognition of passion for music with a fond memory of his grandmother:
“Well, one day I was listening to records at my Nani’s house. I must have been about 17 years old at the time, and I felt at home with the music. I felt as if I understood the stories that were being told by the musicians. It came natural to me that I wanted to tell my own stories some day.”
Attfield enjoyed his fair share of athletic participation during childhood. For 15 years he played both Hockey and Baseball, receiving recognition for his performance such as being the “key hitter” for his high school’s baseball team. Matt also enjoyed playing other instruments during his childhood, including the euphonium and piano. During his 2006 sophomore year, Matt’s musical abilities were recognized when he qualified for the NYSBDA (New York State Band Directors Association) under director of Saxophonist Jim Snidero.
During his high school years, Matt was greatly influenced by mentors Ken Kuriscak and John Hasselback. Ken Kuriscak, high school Jazz Teacher, went above and beyond in his duties to ensure Matt was equipped for success. In Attfield’s own words on Ken:
“... He would stay after school with me and we would trade off on playing Standards. This was so important because it was a time when I grew as a player.”
Upon recommendation from mentor Ken Kuriscak, Attfield began studies under his first Jazz Trombonist instructor John Hasselback. Attfield is noted as saying John was “a monster player who had a tone similar to J.J. Johnson.” Both Ken and John gave Attfield a list of musicians to check out, jumpstarting his career and the pursuit of excellence. Another great influence, grandmother Nancy Rescigno was the first to introduce Matt to records and musicians.
Attfield pursued his passion for music by achieving a Bachelor in Fine Arts: Jazz Studies from the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music in 2012. Later in 2014, he received his Masters in Music at Northern Illinois University, solidifying his qualifications for music comprehension and composition in the academic realm. During his stay at NIU, Attfield was a member of NIU’s premiere jazz group, the Rosebud Jazztet. Other private studies Matt has pursued include Jazz Harmony with Pete Malinverni, trombone performance with John Fedchock, and Jazz Pedagogy with Ronald Carter.
Matt has an outstanding resume in sideman performances, playing with big time jazz veterans such as Grammy award-winning bassist Dr. Todd Coolman, Chris Potter, Sean Jones, Juno Award nominee Rodney Whitaker, and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. His impressive and sought after sideman performances have launched him all across the country. Matt has even travelled abroad, playing at the International Music Festival in Chong Qing, China with NIU’s premiere jazz combo Rosebud Jazztet in 2013.
Not only a performer, Matt has enjoyed great success as a jazz educator for many years. Attfield’s mentoring began with the opportunity to direct the top high school jazz players from Winchester County in a band recognized as the “Jazz Elite”. During his Masters studies at NIU, Matt studied Jazz Pedagogy under professor Ronald Carter, one of the best Jazz educators in the world. Matt’s studies prompted professor Carter to ask Matt to direct the 3rd Jazz Ensemble at NIU. Exceedingly successful during his leadership at NIU, Attfield has been included as a publisher for professor Carter’s second edition of his book on Pedagogy, a book published and delivered worldwide. Matt has also travelled the country with professor Carter, teaching jazz at numerous high schools and colleges/universities. Attfield intends to continue his work as a clinician and master class instructor, travelling the country to perform with and instruct groups to reach a higher level of play.
Inspired by the sorrowful passing of his beloved grandmother in late October of 2014, Attfield released his first album titled Belle e Angelica to honor her. With composition of the album beginning the day after his grandmother’s passing, this honorable piece has been accompanied by jazz masters Marlene Rosenberg on bass and Reggie Thomas on piano.
