About Dennis
Music is a language that can change lives. Music can entertain, but music also can heal. Music can be spiritual and inspirational. I have a true joyful passion about sharing music in-depth and with attention to detail. Music is an adventure! Join me!
I love to share my love and joy of music with my students. Whether teaching piano or conducting, composing or playing pipe organ, singing or learning music history, music is fascinating and engaging!
I have been teaching for over 45 years. Each time you teach and teach well, you learn! Therefore a great teacher learns and a great learner teaches!
My Bachelor's is in Organ, Voice and Music Education; my Master's is in Composition and Church Music and I did Doctoral programs in Musicology and Conducting.

We start with fun and the basics! With piano we begin with scales and chords; with pipe organ we start playing the pedal part. With beginning composition we write a two-part piece in ABA form; with voice we warm up the entire range of the instrument.
I have worked with womb-to-tomb or cradle-to-crypt learners. I have done a choir for 2 to 5 year olds (with parent) and for 10 years had a Senior chorus where the youngest was 80 and the oldest was 103.
Know that music is profoundly, profoundly rewarding but takes commitment!
I just in March conducted the four Coronation anthems of Handel on a concert with the Ode on the Feast of Saint Cecilia for chorus, orchestra and soloists; it received a long standing ovation.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do I bring to the experience and what does the teacher wish to bring?
How much should I practice?
What should I reasonable expect?

To Whom It May Concern:
I would like to take this opportunity to highly recommend Dr. Dennis Northway for Ministry of Music positions in your area. I base my opinion on the almost ten years I have been privileged to know Dr. Northway, in his capacities as choral director, superb organist, and highly effective musical educator.
Having sung for several years in the annual Handel Week chorus directed by Dr. Northway, at Grace Episcopal Church in Oak Park, I can attest to his meticulous attention to detail, to period appropriate renditions of the master composers’ vocal and orchestral works, and to the enjoyment he imparts in singers when teaching us to present this beautiful music to our audiences.
Dr. Northway is known throughout the Chicagoland area as an accomplished organist, builder of organs, and musical composer. He is cherished and appreciated by his childrens’ and adult choruses, ranging in age from preschool to older adults. He is highly esteemed by singers and church members alike, and in my opinion truly embodies the highest Christian qualities of respect and concern for his fellow human beings. Your congregation’s musical experience would be well served by hiring Dr. Northway as your musical director, and it is my pleasure to recommend him for such a position.
Cordially,
Kathleen Morris
Handel Week chorus member
