About Ellen
I teach both piano and bass (upright and electric).
I started out on piano and studied classical music for 10 years. I feel very comfortable teaching beginners to low intermediates on piano.
I am currently a jazz bassist. I play electric bass currently. I played upright bass for 17 years. I feel comfortable teaching any style (other than classical music) of music on bass, either on electric or upright bass. I feel comfortable teaching classical music on bass to players who are beginners to low intermediates. Correct fingering, intonation, learning the fingerboard etc.
References provided upon request.
I have been teaching both bass and piano for around 26 years. I teach private lessons to bass and piano students out of my home studio. I also teach bass at SUNY Plattsburgh ((concealed information)
Teaching never gets old for me. I find that I learn from my students, quite a nice perk of the job. I get a great feeling to watch people that I teach take the ball and run with it. To see my students' pleasure from learning a piece of music on piano or widen their improvisational skills on bass gives me that great feeling.
I started teaching bass after my study with Cecil McBee.
I started teaching piano through the Monteverdi Music School in Montpelier.
I studied classical piano for ten years and got to the level of intermediate.
I am self taught on bass, however I received a fellowship from the National Endowment Fot the Arts to study with master bassist, Cecil McBee.

Piano: We decide on a lesson book. The student may have books to bring in. If not, we find a good one together. At each lesson we work on something together. The student knows the material well enough by the end of the lesson to be able to go home and practice for a week, master it, and come back to the next lesson, ready for more. I recommend practicing six days per week (at least five days) to move forward and feeling good about the whole experience.
For bass it's a little harder to describe. A lot depends on what my student's goals are. I teach how to read music notation and how to make up one's own bass line. There are various books for that, depending on the goal of the student.
Since I teach all ages, the amount of time at each practice is different, depending on the age of the student. What really makes a difference is going away from the instrument and coming back to it, which is why I recommend practicing six days a week.
I have taught people of all ages, 5 - 85, girls, boys, men, and women.
The student must like and trust his/her teacher. The teacher must earn that trust. Trust of the teacher is very important in the relationship between teacher and student. Lack of it can hold a student back from learning and having trust in one's teacher can help a student really move forward.
A recent event I am fond of is quite recent- today! I taught piano to a nine-year old girl who lived in my area. She had never played piano before she came to me. As with all my students, I felt like we were a team and I aimed to make her piano study as positive an experience as I could. We studied together for a year. I enjoyed working with her.
One day she told me that her family was moving to Connecticut in a couple of months and she would no longer be studying with me. I was sad to lose her. She was sailing along learning piano. I did as much as I cold to help her parents find her a good piano teacher that would continue to nurture her musically so she could keep having that positive experience. They found her a good teacher and she has continued to study piano and is moving forward.
Her family was up here over Thanksgiving and this morning they dropped by to say hi, and I asked her if she would play for me. She did- and it was amazing. She has continued to sail along and her mastery has greatly improved!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student must be able and willing to put the practice time in. The lesson is 10% of success and practicing is 90% of success.

She is patient with her students. She provides strong knowledge in beginning to read notes and uses a system of Faber & Faber for earliest beginners (my youngest really likes this) and Teaching little Fingers to play for older students just beginning to learn to play. She focuses on the whole student and helps them build confidence as they approach their learning and practicing! We love her!
Excellent piano teacher to my daughter- we’ve been with Miss Ellen for more than one year now- and enjoy the progress my daughter makes.
I have been taking upright bass lessons from Ellen for over 2 years in her home based studio. During that time, I have established a very trusting relationship with her. She has led me into the world of improvisation and musical mindfulness, at the same time boosting my confidence to expand my skills and knowledge. Each time I come away from a lesson, I feel infused with her knowledge and encouragement. Her teaching style is a direct no nonsense fundamental/theoretical approach combined with compassion for the student. She enjoys watching the learning unfold. She gently encourages you to reach her expectations and your goals. In my opinion, Ellen is the best. Each week, I feel fortunate to be in the same room and learn from her.
Very encouraging with our young daughter. A little eccentric but what artist isn't?
Ellen is a true gem. There aren't enough words to describe how talented, patient, and amazing she is. At nearly age 40, I decided to start taking bass lessons. I have not taken an instrument since elementary school and have never really considered myself musical...but Ellen has helped me find and let loose my inner musician. From the moment we spoke on the phone, she was inviting, knowledgeable, and overall a pure joy to speak with. When our lessons began, I instantly felt put at ease and comfortable. When I first met Ellen I didn't realize what a tremendous and respected musical reputation she has. I've since encountered multiple musicians, all of whom know her and respect her undisputed talent. As one local bassist recently told me, "If you want to learn bass, learn from the best. And Ellen is the best."
As a teacher myself, I am picky about teaching, and Ellen is absolutely fabulous. She always gives just enough structure, and she could easily find my weak points and work on them in a supportive yet challenging way. I have enjoyed every lesson with her and as a real beginner on the bass, I actually felt like I understood what I was learning while working with Ellen.
Ellen is awesome! I approached her as an amateur jazz upright bassist and she really accelerated my learning. It became the highlight of my week over the last 3 semesters at SUNY Plattsburgh (she drives over every week! I'm not a student there, just take lessons) to spend an hour with her. She is a gem of theoretical and practical knowledge about the bass and jazz in general. This stuff totally applies to other musical styles, too. What's really special about her (aside from being a kind-hearted, fun person to be around) is her considerable experience being a jazz bassist--she knows every obscure (and not) jazz tune I brought up, and we covered a lot of ground throughly. She also coached me a lot with some classical repertoire I was working on, which has been invaluable. She can make this stuff so simple and is as approachable as they get.
