About Nicole
I have a passion for teaching and love being a part of the learning process. Seeing a student gain confidence with a new set of skills to help them unlock their natural talents is incredibly rewarding!
I have over 20 years experience teaching voice. I work with students on all styles of music. My teaching focus is on vocal function working with registration (head/chest/belt/mix), breath management and support, articulation, and phrasing.
Because everyone learns differently, I cater the lesson to the individual. I often pull from a student’s interests and experiences to assist me in understanding how to relate to them. I believe it is my job as the teacher to find the best way to describe things so a student can grasp the concepts I am teaching. I do encourage students to give me their input and observations during lessons in order to reinforce the learning process.
Ultimately, I want to share with my students the musical world and all that it offers. I encourage them to explore their own voices to find their unique sound.
I received my Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at Catholic University of America and my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at Sweet Briar College. Over the years I have performed with companies and summer festivals such as Opera Roanoke, Maryland Opera Society, New York Opera Society, Bay Area Summer Opera Theatre Institute, Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, Summer Opera Theatre, La Fabbrica and others. I have performed operas and recitals throughout the US as well as internationally including France, Italy, Canada, and Puerto Rico. My operatic experience consists of full roles such as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Adina (L’elisir d’amore), Mimì (La Bohème), Laurie (The Tender Land), Monica (The Medium), and Rosasharn (The Grapes of Wrath Suite) among others. As an active singer in the DC metropolitan area, I enjoy singing concerts and recitals both as a soloist and as a member and Co-Artistic Director of Sopranessence(formerly 7 Sopranos®). In the fall of 2013, I had my singing debut to a SOLD OUT audience at New York’s Carnegie Hall with 7 Sopranos® as part of the Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) 2012-2013 Artists Series. I have also been featured with 7 Sopranos® in a segment of the Today Show on NBC New York. More recently I was featured with Sopranessence in the 2015 National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, DC.
I have over 15 years of teaching experience and is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). I have a Level III Certification in Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method. I teach both private voice lessons as well as group musical theatre classes including those at the Levine School of Music Summer Camp. My private vocal studio consists of some very impressive singers of all ages and levels of experience. My students have won principal roles in both community and school productions. My students have also been accepted into competitive summer programs including the Crittenden Opera Workshop, Brevard Summer Music Festival, NYC's TISCH summer program as well as college music programs at universities including the Hartt School of Music, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and James Madison University (JMU). I thoroughly enjoy teaching and sharing my knowledge of singing and performance practices with my students.
In addition to my musical career, I also have been teaching group fitness for over fifteen years. I specialize in various formats including Zumba® Fitness, BODYPUMP™, and SilverSneakers® among others. Teaching group fitness classes keeps me in shape and my energy up to handle those difficult opera roles. My fitness background also assists me in teaching voice lessons. Understanding the mechanics of the body allows me to utilize the body with more finesse when singing or instructing voice students. I am able to incorporate my working knowledge of physical fitness into vocal exercises to increase breath support and well balanced posture. These exercises help stimulate muscles that aid in the production of sound and the freedom of movement on stage.

After getting some of the student's background information and learning about his/her past experience with singing, I start with some very basic vocal warm-ups. While the student is going through the vocal warm-ups, I asses how I will work with that student's voice. Because everyone's is unique and has differnt ways of learning, I customize my aproach for that individual.
I have worked with students of all ages from children to adults. I also teach students with various muscial backgrounds and levels of experience. Many of my students study classical music and musical theater while others sing country, rock, pop, jazz, gospel, etc. Some of my students are beginners with little or no experience while others are be professional singers. I also have worked with singer-songwriters.

Details
Tuition is based on the length of the lesson. Students may pay per lesson or pay monthly, however there is NO guarantee students choosing the Pay Per Lesson Plan will receive a regular weekly lesson block. Under the Flat Rate Monthly Tuition Plan students will receive a regular lesson block each week and are guaranteed four (4) lessons per month. If there are five (5) lessons in the month, the 5th lesson is treated as either a “bonus” lesson or a “make-up” lesson and will not be made up in the event of a cancellation.
