About Mattingly

About Me

Baseball has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started playing at just 4 years old, and the game has taught me lessons that go far beyond the field.

I went on to play Division II baseball at Felician University, where I experienced firsthand the commitment, discipline, and mental toughness it takes to compete at a high level. Throughout my career, I experienced the highs and lows that baseball brings — the success, the struggles, the adjustments, and the challenges that test you as both a player and a person.

Those experiences have shaped the way I approach coaching today.

Since my playing career came to an end, I’ve been giving private baseball lessons and helping players develop their skills, confidence, and understanding of the game. My goal is to take what I’ve learned throughout my own journey and pass it on to the next generation of players.

I believe player development goes beyond mechanics. While hitting and fielding are important, I also emphasize approach, preparation, routines, confidence, and the mental side of the game. I want players to understand how to handle adversity, make adjustments, trust their work, and compete with a purpose.

My goal is to help every player become the best version of themselves, both on and off the field. Whether it’s improving their mechanics, developing a better approach, or learning how to handle the inevitable ups and downs of baseball, I want to give each player the tools and knowledge to continue growing.

I’ve spent my life learning the game as a player, and now my goal is to use those experiences to help others grow, compete, and succeed.

What My Lessons Look Like

My lessons go beyond just hitting mechanics and fielding adjustments. My goal is to develop the complete player by focusing on the physical, mental, and strategic sides of the game.

Every lesson is designed with a purpose. We’re not just working to make better swings or cleaner defensive plays. We’re building better habits, a stronger approach, and a deeper understanding of how to compete.

1. Hitting & Mechanical Adjustments

We’ll work on the fundamentals of the swing, identifying areas for improvement and making adjustments that help each player become more consistent, efficient, and confident at the plate.

2. Approach & Baseball IQ

Having a good swing is only part of hitting. We’ll work on understanding the strike zone, recognizing pitches, developing a plan at the plate, and learning how to make adjustments based on the situation. The goal is to help players understand not just how to swing, but why they’re swinging.

3. Routine & Preparation

Consistency starts before the first pitch. We’ll develop routines that help players prepare mentally and physically, whether it’s getting ready for an at-bat, preparing for a defensive play, or establishing habits they can carry into games.

4. The Mental Side of the Game

Baseball is a game of failure, adjustments, and responding to adversity. We’ll work on confidence, focus, body language, controlling emotions, and learning how to move on from mistakes. The goal is to help players stay present, compete with confidence, and trust their preparation.

5. Fielding & Defensive Development

We’ll focus on defensive fundamentals, footwork, positioning, glove work, and making the adjustments needed to become a more reliable defender. Just as importantly, we’ll work on anticipation, decision-making, and understanding the game before the ball is even hit.

6. Transferring Practice to Games

Everything we work on has a purpose beyond the lesson. We’ll connect the mechanical work, approach, routines, and mental preparation to real game situations so players can apply what they learn when it matters most.

The ultimate goal: To develop players who don’t just have the physical tools, but know how to prepare, think, adjust, and compete. Better mechanics are important, but learning how to play the game the right way is what helps those mechanics translate into performance.
