About Susanne
Hi everyone! I'm Susanne, and I've taught all ages from elementary to middle school/junior high to high school to university. Teaching is truly where my heart is. My passion is teaching writing and literature (poetry, short stories, novels, essays, etc.), plus I looooove taking students through the MLA research essay, 9th edition. I have taught at Heritage Christian School (where I homeschooled my four kids from Kindergarten through 12th grade in all subjects except math and high school science ... that's 21 years of homeschooling!), Christian Junior High and Christian High School, Point Loma Nazarene University, and the University of San Diego. Tutoring is my thing! I enjoy teaching writing, English grammar and vocabulary, and especially understanding, analyzing, and writing about literature and poetry to junior high, high school, and college students. Whether tutoring one or a few students or teaching a whole classroom, I will help you to actually enjoy discussing and writing about literature.
Understanding literature starts with connecting with a piece of writing, especially with the characters. Some characters are immediately likeable while some seem unfriendly and/or mean. I will help you to understand a character through their words, actions, and relationships. Plus, we'll explore the author's writing style and the overall point they're making in their writing.
And then there's the art of writing, whether we're writing stories or academic essays, the elements of word choice, clarity, plot, and power work together to create effective and engaging pieces of writing. As an amateur poet, I especially enjoy teaching the art and power of poetry. Plus, teaching the MLA research essay is my specialty! Let's get started!
