About Robert
I taught mathematics at the University of Manitoba from 2005 through 2023, including extensive experience with first-year discrete mathematics. My graduate work focused on graph theory and combinatorics. I specialize in helping university students make the transition from computational mathematics to proof-based reasoning. Because I have taught and graded this material at the university level, I understand where students commonly get stuck, what a complete proof needs to contain, and how to turn an informal idea into a clear mathematical argument. University of Manitoba MATH 1240 students are especially welcome, as are students taking equivalent discrete mathematics courses elsewhere. I tutor online and accept only a small number of students so that each student receives focused, careful instruction.

Discrete mathematics can feel as though someone suddenly changed the rules of math. Instead of simply calculating an answer, you must work from definitions, choose a proof strategy, and explain why something is true. In our sessions, we identify exactly where your reasoning becomes unclear, translate definitions and statements into plain language, choose an appropriate strategy, work through an example together, and then have you attempt a related problem with guidance and immediate feedback. I can help with logic and quantifiers, sets and functions, relations, direct proof, contrapositive and contradiction, mathematical induction, combinatorics, recurrence relations, elementary number theory, and graph theory. My goal is to help you recognize proof patterns and solve future problems independently. I do not complete graded assignments, tests, or examinations for students; I help you understand the material and produce your own work.
