About Sam
I am a qualified secondary-school English teacher with 5 years of classroom experience, a PGCE in English, an Enhanced DBS check, and experience marking GCSE English assessments. I have taught students across a wide range of abilities and confidence levels, helping them develop the skills, knowledge and independence needed to succeed in English Language and English Literature.
My approach to tutoring is calm, encouraging and carefully structured. I believe students make the most progress when they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and building confidence step by step. Lessons are tailored to each student’s needs, whether they need support with exam technique, essay writing, creative writing, comprehension, quotation analysis, SPaG, or understanding set texts.
Above all, my aim is to make English feel clearer, less overwhelming and more achievable. I want students to feel supported, challenged and proud of the progress they make.

In my sessions, I use clear modelling, guided practice and precise feedback. I often break difficult tasks into manageable steps, showing students exactly how to improve their answers and apply exam criteria successfully. I also make use of retrieval practice, model paragraphs, planning frameworks and targeted questioning to help students remember key ideas and become more confident writers.
A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, though I can offer shorter or longer sessions depending on the student’s needs. Each lesson usually includes a clear focus, guided teaching, independent practice and personalised feedback, so students leave with a secure understanding of what they have improved and what to work on next.
My lessons are best suited to secondary-school students, particularly those in KS3 and KS4, and students preparing for GCSE English Language and Literature. I can support students who are aiming to secure a pass, build confidence, or push towards the higher grades.

Sam is currently tutoring my SEN daughter in English Language. I cannot begin to thank him for how incredibly patient and creative he is. I did listen in on the first sessions. His reflexive ability to accommodate her needs, even remotely, is extraordinary. We had a brief chat about her needs prior to her being tutored, and I was truly awed by how he built what we had discussed into his lesson plans.
She hates cameras, for instance, so he has been teaching via shared screens and speaker phone. He simply pauses if she has a sensory need and waits for her to return.
In terms of curriculum, he is responsive to ability and has already advanced my KS3 daughter to KS4 purely by being able to talk to her on her wavelength and recognise her native abilities within her neurodivergence and work to support that.
