My lessons are usually an hour in length and consist of the following format:
1. Lesson Objectives (5 mins)
-Begin by setting clear objectives for the session.
-Outline key topics or concepts that will be covered (e.g., algebra, geometry, etc.).
-Discuss how the topic relates to their syllabus and exam requirements.
2. Review of Previous Material (5-10 mins)
-Start with a quick recap of previous lessons.
-Ask the student to explain a concept they’ve already learned to assess retention and understanding.
-Address any questions or problems they faced in homework or school.
3. Introduction to New Topic (10-15 mins)
-Introduce the new topic by breaking it down into manageable steps.
-Use examples and visual aids (diagrams, graphs, etc.) to explain concepts clearly.
-Encourage students to ask questions throughout.
4. Guided Practice (15-20 mins)
-Work through problems together, starting with simple examples and gradually increasing complexity.
-Use real-world applications to make the problems more relatable.
-Provide hints rather than solutions to encourage independent thinking.
5. Independent Practice (15-20 mins)
-Assign a set of problems for the student to solve independently.
-Observe their problem-solving approach and provide feedback as needed.
-Use this time to identify any persistent gaps in understanding.
6. Review and Feedback (10 mins)
-Review their solutions and discuss any mistakes or misconceptions.
-Provide positive reinforcement for correct methods and clear explanations for corrections.
7. Homework Assignment (5 mins)
Set a small amount of homework to reinforce the day’s lesson.
Ensure the homework challenges them but is achievable with the knowledge they've gained.
8. Closing and Next Steps (5 mins)
-Summarize the key points learned in the session.
-Preview what will be covered in the next lesson to set expectations.
-This methodology keeps students engaged and offers a balance of instruction, practice, and feedback.
