About Sana
My interest in literature stems from theatres as plays such as A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen highlight the victimisation of women during nineteenth-century society. This representation of women as powerless victims has unfolded the flaws of the gender hierarchy in a patriarchal society, and this has encouraged me to reflect upon my own society. Although education for women has improved increasingly in the twentieth century, women continue to be subordinate/inferior to men in light of their intellect. More importantly, by examining feminism and its challenge to the stereotypical image of women, Ibsen’s protagonist, Nora Helmer, shows feminine independence within her marriage. Another aspect of literature that I am intrigued by is how writers blossom their personal experiences into their writing through vivid descriptions in order to convey real-life locations. My passion for English literature is aroused by my curiosity in how writers showcase their individuality through a range of genres.
In the world outside of the academic, I have invested time reading novels that range from the 1600s to 1900s. I. A. Richards states that ‘a book is a machine to think with’, and this influenced me to ‘think’ deeply about social problems such as gender inequality. Also, I am able to reveal my creative inspiration from art to visiting the natural environment, specifically in a literary character’s life. Through art, I can create vivid images in my mind whilst reading novels yet simultaneously draw characters in the described setting provided by the writer. By dipping my brush into the emotion of the characters, I paint their hidden secondary appearance. This has grown my interest in the stories of tragicomedy films that invoke catharsis within me.
Literature provokes limitless interpretations and allows me to reflect on criticisms to create these interpretations. My undergraduate experience has taught me how to organise and present complex ideas and arguments in class discussions and oral presentations. Also, I can critically analyse themes within chosen texts and place them within their relevant contexts.
I am motivated to challenge myself further by expanding my existing familiarity with different historical and socio-political contexts, discovering new fields, and acquiring the skills to enable independent research at an advanced level as I already have an insight into the literature of the Victorian and Romantic periods that has developed a hunger for literature within me. Overall, I want to strengthen my academic voice and share my professionalism in literature with students.
