As a tutor, my main approach is to pull out a student's understanding of the key concepts, and then challenge them to really test their understanding of scientific theories that set the foundation that the student will require as they continue their studies in science. Every lesson is catered to what the student is learning in school/any gaps where they feel like they did not fully understand a concept, or they struggle with how to apply their knowledge.
