About Lubna
I'm Lubna, a Melbourne-based Arabic calligrapher and fine art practitioner with over 15 years of experience working in traditional Islamic letterforms and Thuluth script.
Alongside my calligraphy practice I am a brand strategist, graphic designer and corporate trainer with dual Master's degrees from RMIT University in Communication Design and Advertising. This design background gives me a strong eye for proportion, composition and visual harmony — all of which deeply inform how I teach letterforms.
I am also a botanical watercolor artist and work in English calligraphy, illumination and Islamic geometric pattern. Art and making are at the center of everything I do.
I teach because I genuinely love sharing this art form with people who feel called to it — whether that connection is cultural, spiritual, creative or simply curiosity. I am patient, encouraging and committed to making sure every student feels supported from their very first stroke.
Based in Hoppers Crossing in Melbourne's western suburbs. Available in person locally and online across Australia.

In these lessons you will learn Arabic calligraphy the traditional way — using a qalam (reed pen) and ink, just as it has been practised for centuries.
We begin with the basics: how to hold and cut your qalam, prepare your ink, and form your first strokes with confidence. From there we move into Thuluth script — one of the most elegant and widely recognised styles of Arabic calligraphy — building your letterforms slowly, carefully and correctly from the very beginning.
No prior experience is needed. These lessons are designed for complete beginners who feel drawn to this art form for personal, cultural, spiritual or creative reasons. Sessions are calm, unhurried and deeply personal — calligraphy is a meditative practice and I teach it that way.
Each lesson covers:
Qalam preparation and ink handling
Foundational strokes and proportion
Thuluth letterform construction
Composition and arrangement basics
The cultural and historical context of what you are writing
Don't have materials yet? No problem.
If you don't have a qalam and ink, you have two options — you can start straight away using a chisel nib marker which works beautifully for beginners, or I can send you a starter kit for $65 that includes everything you need to practise the traditional way.
Available in-person in Hoppers Crossing, Melbourne and online Australia-wide. Beginners are warmly welcomed.
