About Laura

.enough to learn the tricks of the trade from a very Hello all ! I am Miss H-K. I am the founder and creator of The HK institute for Wonder and Play a boutique elementary education enrichment program especially built to help support parents and students during this very difficult moment. A little about me , I hold two MA degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University, one in Elementary Inclusive Education & Curriculum Design and the other in Literacy. I was a fellow within the Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop and graduated Summa Cum Laude from both of my programs earning the spot of Valedictorian. I hold three NY State certifications : Elementary Ed (General / Special Education) grades k-2 & literacy specialist. I additionally was classically trained in Italy in both the Montessori and Reggio Emilia and hold my AMI certification birth- age 12. I am curriculum and content design specialist and multicultural children’s literature author and I was lucky special company named Sesame Workshop ; the creators of Sesame Street. I began my post collegiate career working within their content and domestic research departments where I was wrote content for Sesame Street; Abbys Flying Fairy School and their parent magazine. My uniquely created curriculum is a blend of multiple methodologies and basked by over a decade of classroom experience , spanning pre-k all the way to undergraduate and graduate school teacher prepratory programs. Until the pandemic hit in March I was the lead teacher for beautiful community of primary age students in Hoboken NJ at a Montessori school. Due to Covid related circumstances , I our school closed our doors in March and since that moment I knew I had to she everything in my power I could to help the families and children I adore so much. From May - August I have facilitated the creation of 10 learning pods spanning Manhattan, Central NJ and The Hamptons. With the aide of a brilliant sppech pathologist and other industry experts I have worked with families to create completely individualized pods that cater to the unique learning needs of the students they serve. The consistent thread that runs through each pod is that they are very close knit and dictated by the principles of Montessori and Reggio Emilia. We treat the classroom as the third teacher and encourage our students to co create our investigations so each pod starts as a blank canvas and as the year progresses the classroom / projects become somewhat of a reflective portrait of the experiences ans growth of that particular group. Additionally I believe in the importance of incorporating a well rounded approach so language enrichment , steam/robotics and performing arts are incorporated into all. Pods are maxed out at 6 students and extremely
Covid careful. As NY schools have closed much sooner than we would have hoped my fiancé and I have decided to move to the Hudson Valley to be closer to my family and J have decided that I will be personally running a pod myself on a daily basis. I have spent many many hours creating the perfect format for a "Mini Montessori/ Reggio Meeting Area" so that our students can feel as if they are in their regular learning environment and not missing out on a thing due to this very difficult time they are unfortunately having to deal with as they are already taking on one of biggest endeavors of their lives, growing up!I am a passionate advocate for educating the whole child and take the time to get to know all of my students on a very deep level so that I can tailor all of our experiences to support and guide them as they become the best students & tiny humans they can be. Under normal circumstances I would say come one, come all - but due to the very very important safety precautions we are taking against COVID , I ask that If you are interested or have questions please dm me personally so that I may answer all of your questions and see if this is the right fit for you. As I said we are looking to cap this group at 5 so spots are filling quickly and I hope to give an equal opportunity for all interested in participating to apply. Thank you for taking the time to hear about the very special place I've built and I hope to hear from you soon! Miss K
