About Emma
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching mathematics for the past sixteen years in Hereford. It is an exciting and challenging subject and it is very rewarding when students who have previously not enjoyed the subject turn round and tell you that it's now their favourite. Or when students who were predicted a grade D or C at the beginning of their GCSE course go on to study A Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics because they've made such fantastic progress. I believe that each student should learn in the way that works best for them, there is not a one-size fits all approach in Mathematics. This means that I use a variety of methods and techniques to help each student understand the concepts being taught. I have received excellent feedback from former students and their parents on my Facebook tutoring page. My mission is to help students overcome their difficulties in Mathematics and to enjoy their studies more.

I am a highly experienced tutor catering for students aged 10 to 16. I excel at helping students who lack confidence in their ability. I have received outstanding feedback from past students and their parents.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I'm experienced at teaching both GCSE (all exam boards) and the Edexcel IGCSE. I also teach children who are home-schooled and/or live abroad.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I qualified as a Mathematics teacher in 2001 and then taught at St. Mary's R.C. High School in Hereford for 17 years.
Previously I completed 240 credits with the Open University in Mathematics and the Social Sciences.
- How much do you charge?
All lessons are £30 per hour, but am happy to teach shorter 45 or 50 minute lessons pro-rata.
- Where do you teach?
I teach both at home and online via Skype using an interactive online whiteboard that both the student and I can work on simultaneously.
- When are you available?
From Monday to Friday I am available for lessons in the mornings and then from 3.30pm until 7.30pm.
I am also available for lessons on Saturday mornings.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach students from aged 10 upwards.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I help students to prepare for a wide range of examinations including the Year 6 SAT's, GCSE and IGCSE.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I'm experienced at teaching online using a variety of online software in conjunction with Skype.
Students will be sent a link to my online whiteboard and they just need to click the link to enter the online classroom and start working on their maths.
If you are using a Mac computer, you may need to update your flash player first. You need to have a good broadband connection at home for the lessons to run smoothly. A headset with a build in microphone is beneficial although not essential.
The online lesson needs to be paid for in advance of the lesson taking place.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
The more you put into your studies, the more you'll get out of them. There is no quick fix in maths. Be prepared to put the effort in and practise daily where possible. Do not be put off by making mistakes, I would actively encourage you to make them. They will help you to consolidate your learning, identify where you went wrong and to move forward with greater confidence. Enjoy the challenges and difficulties that lie ahead in your mathematical studies - they will help you to become a resilient and successful learner.

Maths was probably the subject I struggled with most at school, absolutely hated it all the way through key stage 3. Got to GCSE years and not confident at all. Luckily I had Mrs Gray she made the lessons fun and interesting and actually gave me the support I needed to gain the knowledge needed to get through the higher level comfortably, she believed in my ability even when I didn't believe in myself, couldn't be more grateful for this as it set me in good stead to move to college and beyond.
When I started my GCSE Maths with Mrs Gray I really struggled with Maths and was working at a D grade. She really went above and beyond and I wouldn't have been able to achieve an A* in GCSE Maths without her help. Mrs Gray's teaching sparked my love for Maths and I achieved an A* in Maths and A in Further Maths 'A' Levels following her help.
Mrs Gray supported me throughout my maths GCSE. I was someone that found maths quite challenging, especially when it came to written exams. She was able to adapt her style of teaching to suit my needs and keep me engaged. She is a fantastic tutor and helped me to achieve a very good grade.
I seriously struggled with maths in years 10 and 11 and my usual teacher was very sceptical that I would be able to even pass my GCSE. Mrs Gray offered me after-school tuition once a week covering every topic that would be on the GCSE papers so that I would stand a chance at being able to pass. Thanks to Mrs Gray I came out with a grade B in maths and felt like I'd really achieved something with her help!
The most incredible teacher I have met. Not only does she care for each individual she takes her time with each pupil and gives them 110%. Maths was fun, she brought something fresh to it and made you enjoy attending after school sessions and made GCSEs much less stressful but making you more determined then ever! I understood things I never thought I would with Mrs.Gray. Maths never came natural to me but she made it so much easier!
Having been told that I barely had a primary school level of maths by more than one teacher I was not hopeful for my GCSE result. However after continual motivation and encouragement from Mrs Gray, I managed to achieve a grade B, which was far beyond my expectations and predicted grade of D. Mrs Gray make maths much more easy to understand for those who find the subject difficult. She has a very effective attitude and teaching style.
Having struggled with maths throughout my whole educational life, by the time I entered into GCSEs I had lost all love for the subject and given up hope for passing the Maths GCSE. Mrs Gray utterly changed my mindset and attitude towards maths. Solving problems became enjoyable and no longer was division an impossible task. Her style of teaching is innovative and engaging. She is renowned for transforming even the most difficult of problems into simple and easy steps.
As someone that struggled with maths and understanding how to do it a standard way, Mrs Gray helped me develop my own way of understanding. She nurtured my alternative ways and methods and always let me work at my own pace. I've always said that she can teach 10 different people 10 different styles of learning at the same time. Absolutely brilliant teacher!
When I was in school I struggled a lot with mathematics. I was often awestruck at how easily Mrs Gray could, without fail, make the answers appear as if from nowhere. What was more important than her abilities as a mathematician however, were her abilities as a teacher. No matter who the student was she always found a way to get them engaged with the subject. Her passion and enthusiasm easily overwhelmed any struggle I had with the subject and really developed my academic confidence.
Emma provided tuition for my daughter Libby during her high school years and GCSE's. Libby hated maths, felt out of her comfort zone and struggled to grasp concepts straight away. Emma provided the gentle nurturing and gave Libby the self belief and confidence that she lacked in Maths. Emma was always calm, friendly, patient and extremely kind to Libby, helping her to achieve a grade B, which at one stage she would never have believed possible.
