About Mary
Hi, my name is Mary, and I’m a medical student with tutoring experience across writing, science, math, and piano, working with students from elementary school through the collegiate level. I approach tutoring with the belief that learning works best when it feels supportive, personalized, and human.
My teaching style is shaped by my own academic journey. I understand what it’s like to falter in school and feel as though there’s no clear way forward, and I also understand the pressure of holding extremely high expectations for myself—wanting to push further even when I was already performing well. Because of this, I’m especially attentive to both the academic and emotional sides of learning.
As a tutor, I focus on identifying what already works for each student and building from there. I adapt my approach to how the student thinks and learns, rather than forcing a single method. In writing, I help students strengthen clarity, structure, and argumentation while preserving their individual voice. In science and math, I emphasize deep understanding and logical reasoning over memorization.
My goal is to create a professional yet approachable learning environment where students feel supported, challenged, and capable of meaningful growth.

I have ample tutoring experience with both children and collegiate-level students across a wide variety of subjects. My methods focus on strengthening what already works for each student rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach. I believe learning is most effective when students feel understood, capable, and actively engaged in the process.
What Do Lessons Look Like?
Lessons are structured but flexible. We typically begin by identifying goals or problem areas, work through concepts together using guided practice, and then reinforce learning through independent application with feedback. I always make sure students leave with clear takeaways they can apply on their own.

Perfect! Following the first lesson with Mary, my daughter, who is in high school, said, ‘She’s great!’ I saw relief and hope on her face for the first time.
My concern when looking for a tutor was finding someone who really understood the material (geometry and algebra) and would be able to explain it in a way that would get through to my teenager. Mary is that person! She quickly figures out where the confusion is coming from and is able to break things down in an understandable way.
Mary is a terrific tutor: she is highly intelligent, truly understands all areas of math and keeps things moving at a good pace. She is organized, flexible and adaptive. Her tutoring is effective.
She is also a kind person and really encouraging. I can imagine that she would be great at explaining math to all ages. Mary continues to be an outstanding tutor for my daughter as it gets closer to exam time.

Mary is an absolutely fantastic tutor with a bright, brilliant mind, a deep curiosity for knowledge, and a kind heart. I've known her for several years now, and she's the most academically dedicated person I've met. She has helped me to better understand concepts in a subject that wasn't my forte. Thanks to her, that subject became so much more understandable. I can 1000% recommend Mary as a tutor!
She makes sure she understands the student's unique learning style before delving into a topic. Doesn't rush through explanations, but is concise and well spoken. She tutored my sister throughout Algebra I and Algrebra II. I recommend her.
Mary was my writing tutor in my first two years of college. I came in having difficulty adjusting from structured high school writing to the freedom given in collegiate level writing. She helped me be both more concise and informative at the same time, all while improving on but not changing my tone.
