About Panos

Over the many years I’ve been teaching Greek to children growing up in London, I've consistently seen the same thing. Of course, as a parent, you want your child to become good at writing and reading.

But at the same time, many parents worry about something deeper.

In a city where English dominates everyday life (school, friends, playdates, birthday parties, extracurricular activities, etc.), children naturally gravitate towards English. So, from the child’s point of view, why should they go through the effort of expressing themselves in Greek if they feel most comfortable doing it in English?

In such an environment, a child is at high risk of losing interest or finding reasons to skip their next weekly Greek lesson. Aside from the struggle of keeping up with the demands of learning Greek, you may have hired a tutor who approaches lessons in a way that makes Greek feel like another school obligation.

Sometimes, a tutor may have little understanding of the specific challenges involved in teaching children who are growing up between two cultures. Over time, this can unintentionally make Greek feel more like pressure than connection.

Of course, it’s not always the tutor’s fault. But in my experience, the way Greek is introduced to a child can potentially shape how they feel about the language later on. A child associating Greek with stress or pressure is probably a parent’s worst-case scenario.

Over the years, I realised that a big part of my job is helping children enjoy learning Greek while continuing to make steady progress over time.

My teaching philosophy is that building a relationship with the child comes first. I try to create lessons that feel safe, structured, and are connected to the child’s interests. I use games and activities rather than making the lesson feel overly formal.

In my experience, children learn best when they feel comfortable, understood, and under no pressure. Collaboration with parents is equally important.

The best proof that this approach works is the number of students who stay with me for many years.

The best example is Elias, who started lessons with me when he was 6 years old. Today he is 14. As I’m typing this, I’m helping him prepare for the Γ1 Ellinomatheia exams. Over the years, he has already passed A1, A2, B1, and B2.

After all this time, he still keeps going.

And honestly, I could mention several more examples like this.

Alongside my teaching experience, I have a background in Greek philology, Special Needs Education from Greek universities, and Cognitive Neuroscience with degrees from universities in Greece and University College London (UCL).

If you are looking for a tutor who can build a consistent and long-term relationship with your child, I would be very happy to hear from you.

Panos Papagiannopoulos

About the lesson

Lessons are adapted to the age, level, and personality of the child.

I teach children, teenagers, and adults, from complete beginners to Ellinomatheia preparation.

For younger children, lessons are structured around games, stories, conversation, reading activities, and interactive exercises to keep Greek engaging and accessible.

For older students, lessons become more gradually structured depending on their goals and levels.

I also work closely with parents to make sure lessons fit realistically within the child's busy school routine.

Lessons are available online or in person in London.

We recently started Greek lessons for our 8-year-old son with Panos, and the difference compared to our previous experience has been remarkable.
Panos brings a very friendly and approachable style that immediately makes our son feel comfortable and engaged. Unlike more traditional methods, he doesn’t rely heavily on standard textbooks. Instead, he makes each lesson interactive, interesting, and tailored to the child’s pace and interests.
This approach is exactly what we were looking for. We never wanted Greek learning to feel like a burden or something our son is pressured into—there is no rush to pass exams or meet strict milestones. Our main goal was for him to enjoy the language and build a positive connection with it, and Panos achieves that perfectly.
Our son looks forward to the lessons, which says everything. We would definitely recommend Panos to any family looking for a more engaging, child-friendly way of learning Greek.

Panos has been tutoring both my kids for 2 years now! Panos has been incredible with his time and always thinking of the kids and their stamina during the lessons. It is difficult to keep them engaged on a virtual platform but Panos has been extremely effective in teaching anything from reading, writing and speaking. Both my kids have taken Ellinomatheia at the B1 and B2 level and have passed it. We are looking at the C1 level next. Thank you, Pano!

We highly recommend Panos as a Greek language tutor for children, teens, and young adults. As a family of native Greek speaking parents who wanted our son to master the Greek language, we have been fortunate to have him tutor our son for many years.
To summarize into just a few lines: Panos became not just a trusted educator, but also a mentor to our son. He held him accountable for his progress and used positive reinforcement and thoughtful evaluation to improve his learning skills and deepen his knowledge of the Greek language. Beyond language instruction, Panos introduced our son to Greek culture and philosophy, fostering his critical thinking and analytical skills.
Panos is engaging (in person and online lessons) flexible , and exceptionally effective at teaching Greek at the highest level to an English speaker. Thanks to his guidance, our son achieved an "Arista" (Excellent) score on the B2 Ellinomatheia Greek competency exam last year at the age of 14.

Both my children, now 10 and 7 years old, have been having lessons with Panos for several years, both in person and online. They absolutely love him and always look forward to their lessons. Their progress has been incredible — they have learned to read, write, and speak Greek with confidence. Since Greek is my first language, I am thoroughly impressed with both their improvement and Panos’s teaching approach.
