About Tommy
My name is Tommy, I'm 28, and I'm predominantly a comedy-writer.
While I've known I wanted to be a writer since I was about 4, what I have to show for it doesn't really begin until 2017 when I went to university... I went to Oxford, and I studied Theology and Religion (writing my dissertation on the role of comedy in the Hebrew Bible). While there was a writer-performer, head writer and then president of the Oxford Revue Comedy Society (founded by members of Monty Python, and with previous presidents such as Rowan Atkinson), and wrote and performed in countless live productions around the country. In my final year I began writing for a famous YouTube animation channel, with views on videos I've written now above 70 million.
I then worked in film and TV for a few years, before moving into advertising -- where I worked in a B2B agency as a copywriter and conceptualist, earning an ANA NYC advertising award for work I'd done.
Then from 2023-2025 I completed my MFA in screenwriting at the prestigious National Film and Television School (one of The Hollywood Reporter's Top 15 film schools for 16 years in a row), and wrote scripts for shorts that have screened at numerous major festivals around the world -- though most notably Cannes, Annecy, Aesthetica, and BFI London Film Festival (twice). One film was also shortlisted for a student Academy Award.
So I've been writing for a long time, and writing successfully for at least a few years!
I want to teach writing because I know that it's a very difficult thing to teach, and is something that I have, at points, found frustrating to be taught. Writing is messy, beautiful, colourful, painful and wonderful -- and the road to getting good at it is paved with failure. I truly believe that you can only learn how to do it by doing it, talking about it with an open mind, and then doing it some more... And yet a lot of people will just recommend you read Robert McKee or Syd Field.
So we won't be doing that!
My passion in life is writing, and I love nothing more than talking with people about it. I sincerely believe that everyone can be a writer -- all it takes is open-mindedness, a willingness to play, and focus... So if these sound like things you're interested in exploring, let's get writing!

My lessons can be tailored towards any age, and any ambition within dramatic writing -- whether you'd like to learn about structure, dialogue, pacing, etc.; or want something a bit more open... for example finding your voice as a writer. My MFA in screenwriting, combined with 8+ years of theatre/comedy writing and production, have given me a plethora of tools to help you grow; wherever you want to go, and whatever you want to learn.
While my lessons, therefore, will be tailored towards directions that you set, they will above all be designed to be practical and fun -- because I believe that the best writing comes from a place of enjoyment, enthusiasm and passion. Art is about open-mindedness, exploration and play -- and learning should revolve around and embrace these principles.
Furthermore, in my experience, the most important lessons in writing can't be taught so much as found, and are only truly learned in those "oh, I get it now!" moments where something suddenly clicks as you're writing... A textbook can tell you a thousand times to "write what you know", but until you've understood it in your own work, it's just another intangible. My lessons will therefore be twofold;
1) the theoretical side, in which we discuss the tenets of dramatic writing; and 2) the explorative side, where you complete exercises designed to organically and authentically bring these tenets out -- and in doing so, learn them.
