About Daisy

I teach because I really enjoy helping people learn. Even if someone isn't particularly passionate about a subject, there could be something in it for them. I’m currently in my final year of a four year physics Integrated Masters at an internationally respected institution for physics, the University of Manchester. At A level, I achieved an A* in physics, maths and further maths. At GCSE, I achieved a 9 in maths, all the sciences, as well as all of my other subjects, apart from Spanish in which I achieved an 8. My course requires an advanced understanding of mathematics, since physics at the higher level requires maths as a tool to convey key ideas. I might not be a qualified teacher but since I am studying physics and maths every day, I can present alternative ways of learning things that might not be taught or thought of in a classroom. Studying physics at the University of Manchester has taught me that you can get where you want to get and with that extra push, I can help you get where you want to get too. I like to create a positive, constructive atmosphere with the words “please explain this to me so I know that you understand why you’re doing this” becoming almost expected in our sessions. Maths and physics are all about practice, drumming those key ideas into your head and finding a way to enjoy what you’re doing, all of which I can help with. Thank you so much for reading and I hope that I hear from you soon.

I typically teach classes that are 2 hours long, with a break between each hour, but I do also teach 1 hour lessons too. The most important part of learning maths and physics is not rote learning, but practice and understanding. I offer planned, well thought through and individually adapted lessons as well as good availability. I have been tutoring for three years and I have worked with students of varying abilities so I understand that everyone learns differently and has different academic needs that may not fit the structure of the typical lesson plan I have written below or the structure of a lesson plan delivered in the classroom. I tutor for all exam boards, including AQA, Edexcel and OCR. A typical lesson plan for a 2 hour duration would resemble the following: First half an hour: going through questions I have set you to do at home and working out your weaknesses on that specific topic (e.g. Mechanics). I provide subject specific wording corrections to right answers, explanations to wrong answers, ask questions about right answers to make sure you understand what you did and present alternative explanations that you haven’t been taught in class to relevant questions to make concepts more simple. Second half an hour: presenting a lesson on a different topic that you have also stated you struggle with (e.g. Particle Physics), with me asking you engaging questions throughout to check your understanding, explaining any pitfalls. Final hour: 1. going over questions from Particle Physics to check what you do and do not understand and to see how you approach questions. 2. asking you questions about the explanations given earlier in the session to see if they have stuck. At home work for that week: Particle physics questions and Mechanics questions. Key points: 1. After each session, I create a summary sheet of everything we have gone over in that session. 2. A few weeks after, I will create a pdf of all the questions you did not get right and set these questions for you to do at home over the duration of 2 weeks to make sure you thoroughly understand the questions and fundamentally, the concepts that you will be tested on. 3. Everything is uploaded to a shared drive week by week so you have a record of everything we have covered.

I give the first lesson for free just so you can check that I’m the right fit for you and what you need. The first lesson is fundamentally about me understanding how you think and what you need from me as well as getting to know you. I’m unfortunately not offering in person lessons right now because I’m at university, but online does not affect lesson quality in any way. If you’re situated in London, I’m happy to do in person whenever I’m there with no travel costs added!! Additionally, if you need extra tuition for a few weeks over a holiday near an examination period or during an examination period, that is negotiable.
