Having previous experience of terrible tutors, I find the best way to teach is keep it practical, especially in this industry, it becomes muscle memory, I would encourage some form of history to give a wider range of knowledge of film and where to take inspiration from for their work. I work on building their confidence in their abilities while still providing criticism to improve on for the next task.
